@celia16

I appreciate that. Thank you for the info.

My dad’s is likely due to long standing heart disease and all the meds he has taken for almost 25 years. We try to watch his diet, but at 87, he likes certain treats. Overall, diet not bad. BP is very low. But, doctor says stay on small med. Trying to reduce some of the meds though. Palliative care is what we are choosing at this point. We’ll discuss it further at next appointment. I’m just trying to learn all I can.

@celia16 I had to laugh. My dad was the same, certain treats, no matter! My mother, too, as doctors regulated her diabetes med around her addiction to Hershey's milk chocolate bars with almonds.

Reducing meds when possible is always a great idea, no matter the situation. Your dad's main practice may have access to palliative care resources for you to research. Here is a discussion on palliative care from our cancer support group: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/choosing-palliative-care-what-is-your-experience/ And from our chronic pain support group is their palliative care discussion: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/does-anyone-have-experience-with-palliative-care/

I think that good cardiac diets and renal diets may be close in their scope. It's not unusual for long term side effects from medications to be downplayed in exchange for results. That's how it was with my cousin's kidney disease.
