Total knee replacement problems
I am really hoping someone can help. I had a total knee replacement 3 years ago (age 48) due to a motorcycle accident in my teens. I am in more pain than I was before. My knee constantly feels like there is an ace bandage wrapped around it. It is very tight, stiff, and painful. I did all of the PT and still can't straighten my knee any further than I could before. I have been back to my doctor twice about this problem and have gone to see a different doctor, and they both tell me some patients just don't do so well with knee replacements. This can't be the only answer! I am 51 years old and struggle to accept the fact that I will have to deal with this for the rest of my life. I have very tiny bones. I had a disc replaced in my neck and had to go back in 2 weeks later to have it replaced with a specially ordered disc because the smallest one this particular manufacturer makes was too big for me. It makes me think this might be the issue with my knee as well. Any advice?

With contemplating knee # 2, it gives me pause the loss of activities you were used to. I too was very active, home renovations, getting up on ladders, gardening, bicycling...
It was just that heavy, painful swollen knee thing every night... Don't know if I can do the other knee.
Interesting response from your doctor. Doesn’t seem possible that is the only solution to just have to live with the pain. My surgeon said we could do the revision he could take out the small space or replace it with a larger one. My concern is the recovery plus I have really good flexion and I’m just afraid to mess with it. But I am always aware of my knee replacement. I have pain going up the stairs, pain going down the stairs. Nothing that I can’t live with, but it doesn’t make sense that I had a total knee replacement and I’ve decided to settle to live with pain . I have an appointment with the surgeon on September 6 to discuss what the reversion surgery looks like and how long the recovery is.
Same. Whether I’m bending, walking or sitting or even sleeping I am constantly aware of my that had the TKR. I wonder if I have the revision surgery if that will change. Some of the feeling that I have is if I bend my leg at the knee and shake it from side to side, I can hear a clicking noise, but I also can feel it go back-and-forth. Doesn’t seem right.
wish you all the best in your recovery.
Pl keep me posted about you dr visits and revision surgery.
I my case I had two surgeries already. I first surgery dr put nickel in my knee - that I was allergic to. somehow revision surgery - dr thinks my X-ray does not show any problem. Surgeons are not listening to my concerns - only looking at X-rays .
Having tkr is a life long commitment….. I am few years out now I don’t keep track how long lol just like my age …. I know I had 2 surgeries and 1 mua within 1 year … I went to dr yesterday I lost 10 degrees flexion not being able to get on bike and recumbent…. And let me say I am over a year half out of revision …. But exercising was causing my other knee to have a lot of pain so I was only able to walk and stretch …..well my insurance denied hyaluronic gel shots that is what i want to try ….. I do not or will not have surgery on other knee ….he said he does blame me after everything I have gone through but he did say this would be a partial because only affecting inside the knee…. But also said try some alternatives therapy first…. So anyway I am hitting gym gain back the lost flexion …. But I will have to guard my other knee this is tricky …..I know that exercising after tkr is a life long commitment so easy to lose degrees especially if you had issues…..so let you know how it goes …..I like everyone very aware I have had replacement my knee never lets me forget either…..so we continue pushing toward a few steps and one back story of my new life ….. good luck to all
I’m considering a revision. Why did you have a revision, what was the recovery from it like and are you happy with the result? Also, who did your revision? Was it the same surgeon who did your original TKR?
I had revision and it was very difficult to say the least. I had no choice since the glue had not taken and the original tkr was actually bowing inside my body. BUT the revision knee is very large and I'm told in ten years (which is now 7 and a half) I will need a revision of the revision. Since the units are larger they don't last as long. I have since had tkr on the other knee and also am reminded everyday by my knees that I had the surgeries. Going back, I'm not sure I would have had the surgeries at all. Although I need to remember I was bone on bone and that was painful for sure. It's a tough road. Wish all the best of luck.
Thanks for replying.
My revision was amazing that over stuffed feeling was gone … I woke up with no pain …. I did have another dr . My original dr said nothing was wrong with knee….when I went for second opinion that dr told me was to big …. I am glad I had it done recovery for me was not to bad …unfortunately I still struggle due to damage and scar tissue having wrong size in there for a year ….. but the revision has given me more flexion …. Can’t say has taken all may pain away or given me 125 like a lot of people but I better than 65 that is where I was before revision …so glad I did revision…hope this helps ….good luck to you
Good news! Were you able to begin PT exercises soon after revision? May I ask what your knee flexion after the surgery was/is? Is PT helping it improve?
