Lowering LDL to help bones
I recently consulted with Keith McCormick, DC, (author of the excellent book "Great Bones"), who said I have to get my LDL down. Until reading about it in his book, I had never heard of high cholesterol affecting bones. High cholesterol runs in my family. Since the consultation I have been eating almost only healthy fats and reducing my fat intake overall. For example, I used to eat a fair amount of cheese and crackers and am switching to carrot sticks and hummus or baba ganoush. More fish and chicken and less red meat. It has resulted in a little weight loss but also seems to have eliminated edema at the ankles. I have very thin bones to start with and 5 vertebral fractures. I wonder how long it takes to show a difference in LDL. Has anyone has success reducing cholesterol with diet?

Hi. I think changing your diet is a great idea. From those I know who have familial cholesterol issues, Most have to also use medication to help. But I don’t know what your numbers are to begin with and working closely with your doctor you both will decide what would be best for your situation. Good luck.🙏
If you drink French Press coffee, changing to filtered coffee could bring down your cholesterol by about 10 points. Eliminating or vastly limiting simple carbohydrates (pasta, white rice, anything made with flour) and replacing those with complex carbohydrates (vegetables and fruits) will also be helpful. Increasing fiber content through added veggies and fruits as well as whole grains, nuts and seeds and something like psyllium fiber may also contribute to bringing down cholesterol.
Are you on any medication for osteoporosis and a calcium supplement? As @teb stated diet changes are the best method. Eating oatmeal is an excellent way to help start your day and decrease your cholesterol.
Yes. Diet helps tons! I switched to sardines and salmon and more fish. The effects are seen in a few months. However, be sure you don't have something else - like a familial cardiovascular problem (I have it). So in my family "eating perfectly" did not do the trick. Start with the change of diet. See if that does the trick. Increase your activity (exercise!) that helps too. My dad did statins, I could not. But the LEVQIO is also working wonders!
I just started tymlos and take calcium (Bone Builder with boron).
Thank you and @loriesco for encouragement and comments
Anyone use cinnamon and how much?
You are most welcome! A lot of people here have, in turn, helped me too!
Hang in there with the Tymlos. Most people DON'T have side effects, but some of us DO and this forum is amazing for that support! Be sure you have had your calcium and Vit D labs done before you go any further - with either. Neither should be too high. My calcium has always been 9.7 no matter the weather, LOL. So if your calcium is normal you would NOT take any supplement. It is the same with the Vit D -- I do take a D supplement and had to make sure it stays in range. Good luck!
I’m on Alendronate 70mg every 7 days orally.
Loriesco, what is Levqio?
