Statin discontinued due to neuropathy. What are some alternatives?
I have been using Lipitor since 2007 for lowering my cholesterol which is on the list of those medicines that are suspected to cause neuropathy. I am thinking of discontinuing this menace but before doing so want to check with those members who have discontinued using statin and what is their experience. What alternative methods have they since adopted for lowering their cholesterol .. diet, alternative medication, exercise or anything else ?

I have been on atorvastatin for 12 years and been dealing with numbness in my feet and sinus issues and a scratchy throat and weakness and tired all the time and breathing issues they said it was COPD Neurology doctors couldn't find anything wrong allergy doctors said i had a allergy to mixed weeds and trees. sleep half the day no energy so i finally decided to test myself and withdraw medications to find out if it was a side effect and low and behold stopped statin and everything stopped energy is back breathing is like a received a lung transplant I can walk better without having to sit down I don't know which is worse the side effects or risking a heart attack???? or the doctors never considering things were side effects!
How long after you stopped med did symptoms leave?
a day and a half
There are alternatives; discuss with physician and/ or pharmacist. I made dietary changes 2 + yrs ago but genetics has caught up with me. So statins it is. I don't have neuropathy at this time
Hi,
After 30+ years in the 8 to 10 range for cholesterol and having reacted to all meds I was feed I stopped worrying about it and no longer medicate it. A cholesterol specialist checked me over and confirms my eating habits were good 30 years ago, so I can only assume the man made rubbish is just that, rubbish. Regardless of my physical state the cholesterol level never differed for me, from extremely fit to couch patatoe always around the 9's.
I suffered kidney damage through accident 12 years ago and went onto a "kidney friendly" diet. Suddenly my cholesterol levels started dropping to the mid 6's. Now my Dr's complain about my high choleterol level until they are told to read my history! Essentially I'm no salt, little red meat and absolutely no man made or adulterated foods including no sodas, especially the sugar free. I prefer natural, fresh and home made food where I know it's parentage.
There are groups of people around the world living successfully with either high or low cholesterol levels.
Cheers
I had several complications with statins before my PN diagnosis. My cardiologist put my on an injectable drug called Praluent. It works much better than statins and no side effects that I am aware of. All of my lipid panel numbers are very good
Is your health insurance covering the cost of Praluent? If not, is the cost considerably less than Repatha?
Originally, I was getting probably it free due to our household income but later I had my plan D administrator move me to a drug plan that would pay for a considerable portion of the Praluent otherwise it would’ve been very very expensive. I don’t know how it compares Repatha.
I have not checked this out yet.
Someone on another site mentioned CHOL-support
from Life Extension.
She herself is using something from Europe that she orders that had red yeast, etc.
What she orders contains no statins….
