Best Calcium Supplement?

Posted by SRKONA @trixie5141, Apr 22 7:20am

Which is the best type of calcium supplement? I've been taking calcium citrate (Citracal) which I understand is more easily absorbed than calcium carbonate (Caltrate). Most recently I've been hearing about calcium phosphate as an alternative. I like that it is available as a powder and may be less constipating than calcium citrate but it seems that is calcium phosphate is more for pets. Your thoughts?

Thanks! I'm a newbie, as I was only diagnosed 2 weeks ago with severe osteoporosis and I'm scrambling to get up to speed. I immediately bought 2 large bottles of calcium, only to later learn that due to my high coronary calcium scores, I should not use them! So I'm thrilled to learn about this water. Getting 260mg of calcium from 1 bottle of water daily makes it alot easier for me to manage!

There's 300 mg in just 8 oz of milk which is my preferred method as it also provides protein and vitamin D for absorption.

I drink 1/2 liter of Gerolsteiner mineral water every day. I originally bought it because of the calcium content. After drinking it for a couple of months, it also lowered my blood pressure.
That was an added bonus.
My only problem is that the carbonation is causing canker sores in my mouth. Does anyone have any suggestions or a treatment that works?

When my son was in high school, he often had canker sores, so I asked the school nurse what can I do. She told me to get Cepacol mouthwash and have him rinse his mouth with it. It worked, now many, many years later that’s still my choice of mouthwash. I could not find it anywhere but on Amazon. Hope this helps you.

Doesn't all that mineral water affect your bowels?

I have used BoneUp by Jarrow for years for calcium and minerals. Compounding pharmacist and chemist lectured years ago stating the only form of calcium that can truly get in and build bone is mycrystalline hydroxappetite. I’m sure I spelled that wrong. Ha. It’s a great product with several leading ingredients and proper forms shown to work the best.

The Gerolsteiner mineral water in the glass bottles is 750 ml or 25 oz. I drink 1/2 of a bottle a day which is about 12 oz. That provides 100mg of calcium plus other minerals. It’s another way of getting more calcium. I don’t know of any side effects from it.

I take Calcium MCHA which is the only type to show an actual improvement on bone health. Do not take magnesium at the same time as any Calcium supplement.

Why not take magnesium at the same time as calcium please?

I asked my doc the same thing. But she had tested my magnesium and said it was already at very healthy levels, so to not add a supplement. Guess too much of a good thing could be too much? There are probably people with more knowledge on this here than me, but that is my experience so far. There are foods, like pumpkin seeds, that are high in magnesium and I do try to partake more in them than I used to….!

Thank you for responding. Food is always the best choice. I have so many
allergies that it's tough for me to get enough of the right nutrition
