Shelley, rather than take advise from anyone, why don't YOU GET INFORMED? Because, if you want to find solutions, THEY WILL NOT BE IN OUTDATED, BARBARIC THINGS like enemas. You have to ask why your body is doing what other peoples' bodies are NOT doing, that points to understand what "modern" medicine and S.A.D. (the Standard American Diet) is doing to some people's digestive tracks. If your so "stinking tired," get out of the 20th century and avail yourself of research (including at our national laboratories) on the human genome and the human microbiome. Did you know, for example, that researchers are finding they can REVERSE some forms of diabetes by modifying diet away from carbs and sugar and adding specific probiotics? So, stay in the 1990s and 1930 or 1880s or enter the 21st century of healing the MICROBIOME!? READ SUPER GUT!
Kathleen,
Enemas have a useful place, at times. I would certainly prefer them to the "digital removal " method, when I have had to literally digitally dig out poop, to create a hole big enough to allow the impacted poop out. But my poop was so impacted, these 3x, that it plugged the holes in the enema tube. I know how to NEVER GET THAT BAD again, but it would not fit in your belief system. Shelley
Oh, no, no, no, NO! Epsom salt is NOT recommended if you might have SIBO. Also, enema? What is in, 1850? You need to be building your microbiome, not potentially harming it with things like Epsom salt or enemas! That's why some alternative practitioners are telling people with severe digestive problems, ABSOLUTELY NO COLONOSCOPIES because the "clean out" can destroy what little microbiome you have left!
Magnesium might be okay. I'd do it in a LIQUID FORM but don't treat the wrong "side' of your illness, address the microbiome and nutrition (Don't forget the "alphabet" vitamins, especially the B vitamins (without which, you can't properly use other vitamins) and ALL minerals. But constipation is a sign of an microbiome imbalance!
Kathleen,
A second reply, I have no idea if you have had to feel the excruciating pain, long lasting, weight gain for no apparent reason whatsoever, not been told the correct results of tests, have your doctors humiliate you for being constipated and then drop you as a patient following a lovely ER via ambulance, nasal gastric tube, 3 days in ICU, for twisted small intestines. If not, I am sure glad for you.

I have endured far worse than that!!! Try 40 years with THE 4TH DEADLIEST AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE KNOWN ON THE PLANET, and that as my doctors did draconian ILL-ADVISED THINGS, like those you mention above, that worsened my situation in everyway.
I'm done here. I have told you what I know, which is YOU MUST LEAVE DOCTORS AND FIND YOUR OWN WAY TO HEAL YOUR OWN BODY, and you won't do that unless you embrace 21st century medicine and research about the human microbiome. And let me remind you, if you don't find out whether you have S.I.B.O. or pernicious anemia WHICH YOUR DOCTORS DARNED WELL WON'T, you'll never improve. There's a company that does approved testing in Boston, but I can tell you with 100 percent certainty, YOU HAVE CONSTIPATION-DOMINATE SIBO (NOT, IBS, since there is no such thing), and unless you find ways to improve your diet, SUCH AS NO SUGAR OR REFINED CARBS, probiotics, digestive enzymes, likely NO GRAINS, you will continue sick.
But in today's broken medicine (doctors in "lame" stream medicine are poorly educated and uninformed), you must get outside the box and find your own way. START WITH READING SUPER GUT!!!! and everything you can on S.I.B.O.
Kathleen,

Enemas are barbaric, OUT DATED and will absolutely WORSEN YOUR SITUATION if you (like 99 percent of Americans) have an imbalanced microbiome.
Stop telling me things like 'impacted' stool. The issue is WHY. Answer: Your gut microbes are off, for whatever reason, whether diet (likely), antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (which should be OFF THE MARKET) or a sugar addiction.
You will get that bad again if, as Einstein said, you keep doing the same things and expecting different results. Get off S.A.D., get EDUCATED on 21st century medicine versus 18th century enemas AND for God's sakes get on so probiotics and stop feeding the bad microbes that are making you sick with SUGAR, breads, etc.
My response: B-12 BLOOD LEVELS are an INDICATION OF NOTHING. I was to the point of semi-paralysis and still carried "normal" B-12 level, because the liver will "mine" itself to keep normal levels in the blood.
Bioavailability does not matter if YOU HAVE A GENETIC INABILITY (some believe due to gut damage from eating GRAINS (all grains)) to absorb B-12. If you have Celiac disease, your doctor is an idiot (likely is one anyway) if he/she hasn't sent you for an intrinsic-factor antibody test AND a gastrin test. My gastrin levels, on a scale of 60, were at 3. So, duh, I can't digest proteins (though I help that with digestive enzymes and HCL pills), fats or cellulose, to wit, a fresh, green salad might kill me.
Of note, Americans basically NEVER HAVE significant iron deficiency, or if they do, IT'S BECAUSE OF A LACK OF B-12 IN USABLE FORM. I tried B-12 shots when I was diagnosed. After a few months told my "doctor' he could put them where the light doesn't shine, and get by quite nicely on sublingual B-12, though I'll fight digestive problems (made worse by Nexium and other proton-pump inhibitors) all my life because I have GENETIC PERNICIOUS ANEMIA that upwards of 70 doctors failed to diagnose, though my symptoms were classic.
Even today, I encounter almost EVERY DOCTOR as being unaware that pernicious anemia causes SEVERE DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS, with a reminder that 85 percent of those with P.A. go undiagnosed for 10 years or more and then are diagnosed by "Dr. Google," or in my case, a chance viewing of a SECRETS OF THE DEAD on PBS about P.A. But for that, I'd still be undiagnosed.
There is a very simple and absolute proof Dr. Steve Gundry is more interested in money than helping people get well. In his own words he had a patient he calls "Big Ed" whose arterial blockage dropped 50% over 6 months while the patient lost 45 lbs. So Gundry tried the diet of Big Ed and it worked on him. Then his office staff tried it and it worked on them. So the obvious question is, if it works so well, and this is before all the research and development of his bottled products, using instead regular food and perhaps health food store products, so clearly none of the Gundry products are necessary. They weren't needed by Big Ed, weren't available to Gundry or his staff, and yet they achieved great results across the board.
Suffice it to say, Dr. Gundry isn't sharing any of the core information of what "big Ed" used to lose 45 lbs and reduct arterial clogging 50%. That implies very strongly that "Big Steve Gundry" IS IN IT FOR THE MONEY.
MY NEXT STEP IS TO READ Gundry's book The Plant Paradox.
Why am I interested in the book if Gundry is in it for the money? Simple. A neighbor whom I join for Friday night dinners is following the Gundry book The Plant Paradox. He has lost 7-8 lbs in 2-3 weeks - I haven't pinned him down on the specific start date yet while I do my own research... The Husband cooks his own foods, avoids sugar, and is a supervisor of restaurant for a Kosher food organization. He makes ice cream and brownies without sugar and it tastes better than the restaurants supposedly "best" recipes. He knows food, really knows how to cook, and is totally determined to eat healthy. I will refer to him as Mechanic as he fixes cars too.
With all that, I feel it's worth finding out how much of the result is his overall healthy eating and how much is a side benefit of Gundry's advice... to be continued, but frankly, based on the intentional withholding of Big Ed's diet, I am clear that Gundry's primary concern is cashing in. It may not have been his first impulse, andmaybe it wasn't his primary first thought when Gundry started, but until dr. Steve Gundry shares the diet that worked so well for "big Ed" - well I don't trust him. His real motivation seems to be cashing in, Gundry is definitely not sharing the "answer" from Big Ed.

Davidskeptic,
I am pretty much a non believer in Dr. Gundry and his pill pushing. He exclaimed that any oatmeal is deadly to our body. I have Celiac disease, later life diagnoses, so my small intestines have suffered max damage. Oatmeal that is prepared in GF certified facilities is a staple for me, when I get really hungry. I did learn that oats do naturally have 2 things that can be problematic for anyone. I don't remember the names right now. Back to the point of my reply, I saw the Plant Paradox diet, but I didn't know that Dr. Gundry wrote it. If you do get the book and you form an opinion about it, I would consider it a huge favor if you would consider just posting a bit about it. I don't read as much as I used to, MCImpairment, is a real bitch, makes my love of reading more complicated than it sounds. Thanx, ShelleyW

Okay, I'll relent as I forgot one essential thing for someone like you: You absolutely have fatty liver disease (comes with SIBO). The live(r) is the core to all live, all healing and ALL HOPE, so you need to dig it out of the hole it's in. The good news is that of all the organs, the liver has ability to heal and regenerate that is the equivalent of miraculous. It won't happen overnight, so you need to swallow every liver-support you can come across and NOT swallow things like alcohol, SUGAR, refined flours, artificial sweeteners and PROCESSED FOODS packed with toxins.
You need to be drinking (wet forms help flush things out more readily) lemon water, green tea, Traditional Medicine's dandelion tea and nettle tea, organic beet juice, watermelon water, and apple cider vinegar (ONLY BRAGG's, as other forms are dead vinegar) in hot water with honey, which nourishes probiotics in the gut and the liver.
You need to go to Amazon and search under "fatty liver supplements." Buy chicory tincture and/or something like French Market coffee/chicory blend. Buy supplements specifically listed as being for FATTY LIVER. There is a product from Japan (pretty well down on the page that nourishes the liver). But spend your day sipping HEALING liquids because if you can rebuild your traumatized liver, it is your best ally even above probiotics and things to heal the gut.
Again, sugar trashes your liver, and remember that eggs (while healthful in small numbers) burden the liver as does cheese. In fact, due your own research on foods that help liver disease and those that worsen it. I recommend eating an egg versus HIGH-CARB (Gag!) cereals, which you have NO BUSINESS eating! Get up, if you want bacon, have all you want, as my daughter was taught, HER FIRST DAY OF MEDICAL SCHOOL, "Forget all this stuff about meat and fat causing obesity, heart disease, or any such thing. FAT AND PROTEIN LOWER INSULIN LEVELS AND, THEREFORE, ARE THE STRONGEST ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS KNOWN TO HUMANS. With your digestive issues, however, you need to focus on small, frequent meals and, at all costs, avoid getting hungry as then you eat too much--though with fatty liver, LOSS OF APPETITE AND WEIGHT GAIN are primary symptoms, which every d----d "doctor" in conventional medicine is unaware of.
But, read SUPER GUT and OTHER BOOKS ON THE GUT, research SIBO, support your LIVER and start living like a RECOVERING PERSON, RATHER THAN ONE STUCK IN "MODERN" MEDICINE'S VERSION OF HELL. Good luck. True healing takes time, but remember: "Every journey of a 1000 miles starts with the first step."

Gundry is right! OATMEAL is ripping the hell out of you, as will (likely) RICE! Oatmeal isn't even good for horses, as it can cause them to colic. YOUR PROBLEM IS NOT GLUTIN; IT'S GRAINS, ALL GRAINS, something absolutely beyond medicine. If oatmeal is a "stable" for you, IT'S ALSO MUCH OF WHY YOU'RE SICK. (Read my advise below.) Your small intestine has suffered from max damage--as has EVERY AMERICAN'S--from high-grain diets, sugar, ANTIBIOTICS--and if you'd stop ARGUING AND READ BOOKS BY OTHER DOCTORS, LIKE SUPER GUT, you'd understand the WHY OF THAT!
But consider, if your ancestry comes out of Europe, or Asia, or North America (Native Americans) or Africa--in short, ANYWHERE BUT THE MIDDLE EAST, where grains have been around longer, YOU HAVE, GENETICALLY, NO ABILITY TO HANDLE THEM! Perhaps I, in some ways, am more fortunate than you because I have "diarrhea-dominate SIBO," meaning I've had diarrhea for 40 years as doctors stood around with their heads up where the average colonoscopy is done. But, that gut-ripping diarrhea the day after I eat something makes pretty clear what ANY consumption of grains (oatmeal is my worst!) will do to me. That's part of why alcohol is so bad, many forms of it is merely FORMENTED GRAIN, with one theory on alcoholism being that it's just an addictive food allergy, which indeed, you may have to oatmeal.
But you can keep defending what obviously ISN'T WORKING or you can say, "Okay, what is really out there and how can I phase into it." My other post may help because I suspect that much of your MISERY is FATTY LIVER, and if you can HELP your liver clear (Slowly, naturally, NO draconian detox programs! The liver is fragile!) you'll be amazed. It will be like the cloud you're living behind slowly lifting. You will also want to be reading books by Dr. Mark Hyman (though I'm not sure he's into the grain connection) and, of course, SUPER GUT by the author of WHEAT BELLY (Not Gundry) are essential.

You might want to see if you can find the pernicious anemia allergic gastritis diet. It's what I liver with, which makes giving up grains look simple! Part of why so many people of EUROPEAN ANCESTRY have problems is a specific gene error which means we can't handle ANY GRAINS, molds (as in fermented foods, and even some probiotics), salicylates (rife in many plants) and phenols (Ditto! With of note, I live in an area with pinon and juniper trees and when they put out pollen in the spring, I am deathly ill, to the extent I have to leave the area and go south to where they have already finished blooming. That's why I want you to have an intrinsic-factor antibody test because if you have P.A., you need to know it, and no, don't allow your doctor to convince you that your B-12 levels are fine. That's why I went undiagnosed for 31 years. If you don't have P.A., I absolutely know you have SIBO, so GET EDUCATED!
