Liver Functions after Whipple

Hello all. I met with my oncologist this week to discuss elevated liver function labs. She thinks the elevations are due to scar tissue causing a stricture and blocking the bile ducts. She feels this is a result of the whipple surgery. She sees nothing to be concerned about with the liver because my RBC, electrolytes and bilirubin labs are all normal. I’ve scheduled an MRI for next month because that is the best scan to evaluate for strictures. My surgeon wants me to start taking the bile thinner Ursodiol prior to the MRI. Has anyone had any experience with Ursodiol? If so, did you experience any side effects from this drug? Thank you for listening.

I was on 1600mg twice a day. My side effects were nausea and some mild itching. It did motivate me help. My levels are still in the ALT 123 and my alkaline is 475. We also tried accredo no good results there either but biggest problem was nausea all the time.

Hello! I ran into your post while doing a search on this same issue. I had my Whipple June, 2024 and since post Whipple my liver values (AST, ALT, and Bilirubin) have been elevated. I asked my Dr. Oncologist and she doesn't seem concerned at this point as she said these values are "slightly" elevated (AST 46 / ALT 60 / Bilirubin 1.4). How did it go with your MRI? Did your Dr. confirmed the the cause of your elevated liver values was a stricture? What has been the guidance from your Dr. on this long term? Thank you!
