Is it difficult to get an appointment with Mayo in MN?

Posted by wascaly @wascaly, Nov 27, 2023

I wanted to know just how difficult it is to get an with Mayo in MN? I tried the campus in FL (which is only 3 hours from my home), but was told they’re not taking any appointments at all!

Thank you we do have a referral from her Montana dr there and go on 27th. My daughter needs the heart and double lung transplant together they told us and u of I don't do it either but we are taking any appt we get right now and i know they are competent and good too. Today i was told by Iowa total care that the form the Montana dr sent in (following the Instructions they gave them) and it's not right. The first lady said a single case agreement and the second lady with Iowa total care argued with me telling me the single case agreement is the prior authorization!!! They are way different. But we do what they tell us they are the insurance!!!

@jenniferhunter I attached a section of the letter, yes it states they were overwhelmed with patients and couldn't add no value or care, ( if they looked at my stuff I sent Which included tests , surgeon notes, they could have at least helped me out and made recommendations since I’ve seen 4 other surgeons and nobody will do anything as my pain doctor said because of liability . I’m 52 year old can barely walk no longer able to sleep in bed , pain and numbness was only in 1 leg has now moved to both legs, physical therapist are all amazed I can’t find a doctor to help me when I describe the details. My bowels and bladder are getting worse.) I contacted them after receiving the letter and was told they would reevaluate the case if my doctor would write a letter and do a doctor to doctor consult. I had no doctor that would until the last doctor that broke his neck unfortunately. He was supposed to have his NP write it. I was going to check into Cleveland but couldn’t afford the $1800 televisit being with no income for 8 months in which I finally received my disability. Being Mayo had the higher recommendation for back surgeons I chose to go there and hope for the best. I’m trying to stay positive I’ll find someone to help since my surgeon won’t get me out of the wheelchair when I ask about rubbing my back and pain goes straight to the testicle, and being told no it doesn’t, back constantly pops, I’ve fell from so many nerves stinging at one time ( but I’m told there’s no pinched nerves on MRI from October . The pain and numbness is getting worse everyday )

I'm so sorry you're going thru that, as I'm reading your post I'm barely able to walk due to 2 very painful knees. More drs that really don't get what's is like to be the ones living this way. I had a foot dr mess up a simple bunion surgery, had my little toe turned sideways facing out after surgery!!! I mean come on

Idk where you live but i had a Chiro visit one day and i don't know if i moved wrong during the adjustment or if he may have slipped and met something up but anyway I walked out with three bulging discs my lower back and I went everywhere all the chiropractors that I can find in town and they tried every different kind of treatment on me and finally 7 years later we moved and a chiropractor was across the street and I said I'm just going to go over there and try this see what he can do and I tell you what that doctor he looked at my MRI he looked at my back he sat down with me for about a half hour told me what every single vertebrate my back did and he adjusted me and within a 30 days I haven't gone back and that was in 2014. He actually wouldn't adjust me when I went in just a regular adjustments and asked me and my daughter if we had heart murmurs or flutters I mean this man knows things that other doctor should have caught like with my daughter earlier in life maybe I don't know how you go from being a bartender full-time line dancing working at landfill to you can't go up a flight of stairs so I don't know what happened but anyway that doctor's name is doc McSweeney with I will chiropractor in Marion Iowa but he's very good very nice and if you would be interested in going to him to see what he says you want to ask for the dad his wife works at the front desk but ask for the dad McSweeney cuz his kids work there too but he was a blessing to me. Without any surgery of any kind

@sbtheplumber1, you’ve taken the appropriate steps to seek care at Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings. When this happens appointment availability depends on the nature and urgency of the problem and Mayo Clinic's ability to help (as determined by a Mayo Clinic doctor) as well as the complexity of the medical condition.

It sounds like getting a letter from your doctor or nurse practitioner may result in a re-evaluation.

@colleenyoung I sure hope so! Just worried with no new MRIs and the pain management doctor that is sending the letter said the EMG he just done 3 weeks ago says there’s no pinched nerves in the back just the pelvis (which my pelvic therapist disagreed with, she said some is my back ) . I was twisted about 3 weeks after my surgery by someone not knowing I had surgery, then the next week the surgeons NP told me it might be a set back but I could start bending, twisting and lifting up to 30 lbs so that night I bent to dry my calves and felt a burning across my back that has never improved! I honestly don’t think anything happened with the twist I believe it’s from the bend and my October MRI showed more recent changes with findings of Pseudoarthrosis arthrosis which would explain the pain if fusion didn’t take. But the surgeon said everything is healed and I could go play football

@shansmom thats awful we are at the doctors mercy. My surgeon sent me for an epidural 3 months after the surgery that didn’t touch the pain ( if there wasn’t anything wrong why would he send me and his fix is a stimulator , I don’t want to bandaid this if it’s something that can be fixed) . Sadly the pain doctor will understand our pains more since he broke his neck if he gets to return to work . Praying you get some relief !

@shansmom I’m from Indiana. I’ve been to Chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapist, pelvic therapist, I averaged 5-6 appointments a week for a few months due to heart, lung, back, eye, hearing issues, Sjogren’s and different therapies . I recently went to a chiropractor but he done the minimum adjustment because he couldn’t twist me. I recently had a swallow study done but they could only do part of it because I couldn’t hardly lay on the table or twist. I’ve got bulging disc in my neck I’m needing surgery ( I was occasionally getting choked) but none of the Neurosurgeons will do it either . That’s why I was so happy sending info to Mayo thinking I might get some relief and not waste so much money on unnecessary appointments

My doctor suggested Mayo in Rochester. So I contacted them and sent all my info, X-rays, CT’s, MRI’s and was told on a Wednesday they would turn everything over to the doctors and would know something in 4-6 weeks . She said I could send my Emg report in about 2 weeks they would add it. The doctor looked at it the same day mailed out a letter on Friday and I got it on Monday , stating the have a lot of patients coming to them and sorry there’s nothing they can do. No suggestions or nothing, do I called out there and was told if a doc will write them they will review it. I’m waiting because my doctor fell and broke his neck not sure when he will return. His NP has agreed to write the letter and hopefully gets it sent out this week .

I've been to Mayo FL in different departments. Generally they want a referral from a doctor that indicates the diagnosis and all the failed treatments that have been tried- drugs, PT, shots, etc.

@gilkesl I had the surgeons notes sent to them. It was my first time dealing with them and when I messaged them they told me what to have sent not mentioning I needed a doctor to contact them . The pain doctor suggested I go to Rochester because he done his residency there. He don’t usually write referrals to Mayo but was willing to this time since I got denied. So I had no other doctor to agree with me.

@gilkesl when you went for the different departments did you have referrals all at the same time. With me having to sleep in a recliner I’m trying to figure out if I go to Rochester about a 9 hour drive being able to ride that far or if I stop for a room trying to find a room with a recliner might be hard to find. I don’t know about how they work the lady I spoke to on my initial call wanted to know what I needed help with I said my back and neck and she said I had to choose. So I wasn’t sure if you can see different specialties while I’m there
