I want to know if Dr. Gundry's program and medicine for "leaky gut" a scam? Lucien

@tabithatwitch

Well, I have been researching anything that can return my regular BM since my intestinal prolapse surgery in October and now I am becoming more than a little concerned. I also read Dr Gundry's excerpts from his book and I think he sounds like he just wants money from people. Not an expert as he calls himself. I don't know what to use anymore because nothing is really working.. Doctors have prescribe the Miralax, Lactulose, Bisacodyl, Phillips Milk of Magnesia (yuk) and other over the counter things- such a waste of money .... the list goes on... I was so desperate last week I bought one of those liquid enema apparatus kits.. but I felt it was too dangerous and that I may harm myself even further... my PCP suggested eating 2 Kiwi's Fruits and at least 64 ounces of warm lemon water per day.. Apparently Kiwi's are the new "Prunes" Yoga and different types of twisting exercises sometimes gets things moving a bit, but none of this gives me the relief that is needed to be normal. I am literally full of ___ !! Today I decided I am no longer eating because it is not being eliminated properly. I can't go on this way any longer.. Each doctor seems to be of no help. This is such a condition that is difficult and embarrassing to talk about, even to a gastrologist .. I don't know... I feel something is terrible wrong.. Please, does anyone have any have any other suggestions about what I can do this weekend? Thank you so much for any response 🙁

Tabithatwitch, love your name.
I am not laughing at you, but I did chuckle when I read that you are literally full of💩and you are going to quit eating. I have had both for 17yrs. You have been through a lot and are getting lots of good advice from others so I will just use a list, good and bad, these are my personal experiences :
Enema: I have given myself many, it doesn't go up inside far enough. They can be very helpful. If you have never had one, they are an irritant and you will want to poop asap, the pressure is intense. The longer you can hold it in the more productive it will be. I get prepared with a towel and pillow, and stay on my knees (I don't lay down) as the pressure builds, I rock back and forth, it seems to lessen the pressure, then rock faster, count to ten, then again, anything to help you hold it in. I had success with Fleet enemas. Salt enemas were a painful failure.
I don't know if after your type of surgery you have to be extra cautious or not.
I currently use 3 capfuls of miralax and 5 Metamucil gummies, 1-2x day as needed. Sometimes I go straight to explosive diarrhea, or mush, or it takes 2 days to get moving.
I have been having X-rays every few months for years, only 1x I was normal. A few had mild poop, most showed heavy fecal load.
I would love to use food/yoga ect but I can't. Example with prunes, I ate 10-25 per day and got more backed up and gained weight.
I am simply too exhausted and in pain to wait to see if prunes or exercise might work. I just noticed that this is a year old post, so... I hope you have found your sweet spot and are doing great. Shelley

Kathleen, I LOVE your use of all caps! I am with you on how a lot of modern medicine ie, the dr.s that practice (isn't that a VERY odd word for the medical profession..it really does seem to suggest that we, the sickest people, are just guinea pigs) are useless. When your GI specialist says "I have no idea how the ANS(Autonomic Nervous System) works, you are constipated. If you have nerve issues you need to see a neurologist ". I swear he said this to me. I get the impression that dr. Gundry helped you with something. Would you be willing to share? Personally, I couldn't care less about who, what, where...if it helps me. I have never had PPIs, I refused them. I feel the same about PPIs, reverse mortgages and annuities... but this is my opinion. BTW, I think I was one of the recent negative posts about gundry/oatmeal. Well, Dr. Gundry and other doctors trying to do 2020s medicine versus 2024 medicine simply confirmed my suspicions that even premier clinics like "the Mayo" and Cleveland Clinic are fundamentally pretending like its 1990, not 2024. Plus, I worked as a reporter covering a national laboratory for a major daily for many years, and was told, repeatedly, by their scientists, that with knowledge of the microbiome we can, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY avoid illnesses, by treating the gut with microbes, and treat illnesses, especially digestive issues, but instead, "modern' medicine gives us labels like IBS, chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia and ignores us. And what you allude to in your "nerve issues" analogy is so defining of FAILED medicine. "Doctors" want to treat symptoms, though post-human genome mapping, we know that the cause of illness is almost always MILES from the symptom. With me, I walked around for 31 years--REPEAT! 31 years--as I consulted with upwards of 60 doctors, including the Cleveland Clinic and the University of California, Davis; and the University of New Mexico, and not one of them found my dangerous GENETIC FORM of pernicious anemia, still considered the 4th most deadly auto-immune disease on the planet! That I FINALLY got diagnosed at all was because, on a day when I was too sick to even walk, I happened to watch a PBS thing on pernicious anemia and how "modern" medicine isn't catching it (and Americans are AGAIN DYING OF IT!) because they are operating under the MISINFORMATION that they can check B-12 levels and rule it out. THAT TEST IS INVALID! I called my worthless primary the next day and suggested that, he AGAIN, check me for pernicious anemia (I had suspected and had demanded testing earlier.), only this time that he DO SO CORRECTLY, by doing an intrinsic-factor antibody test and/or a gastrin test. The antibodies (that destroy the stomach) were through the roof. The gastrin (to digest proteins, cellulose and fats) was almost non-existent. But then a new problem, ever busy looking for more PROFITABLE illnesses to treat, I found that doctors anywhere anymore don't know diddly squat about this potentially deadly disease, and I'm still on my own dealing with my body (and drugs doctors had unadvisedly given me earlier) destroying my stomach! It's clear to me that "modern" medicine, for people with anything unusual and UNPROFITABLE for "modern" medicine, has one bit of advise for us: find a dark alley to crawl into and die but don't waste our time! BTW, I was sent to a neurologist for my pernicious anemia because my primary was so uninformed he did not know it isn't a neurological disease, IT IS AN AUTO-IMMUNE/METABOLIC DISEASE. So, doctors so poorly trained they don't even know, apparently, how to access computer data bases to get educated! A lot of sources--acquired on my own--have helped me, especially the pernicious anemia society of Great Britain, but also the book SUPER GUT, Gundry's wisdom and anything I can get on digestion and (something else no one tested me for) on Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, in my view, at epidemic levels because of "modern" medicine, drugs and processed foods.

Kenjack07,
What type and dosage of magnesium?
Epsom salt, drink it or as an enema? Thanx Shelley

Jump to this post

Oh, no, no, no, NO! Epsom salt is NOT recommended if you might have SIBO. Also, enema? What is in, 1850? You need to be building your microbiome, not potentially harming it with things like Epsom salt or enemas! That's why some alternative practitioners are telling people with severe digestive problems, ABSOLUTELY NO COLONOSCOPIES because the "clean out" can destroy what little microbiome you have left!

Magnesium might be okay. I'd do it in a LIQUID FORM but don't treat the wrong "side' of your illness, address the microbiome and nutrition (Don't forget the "alphabet" vitamins, especially the B vitamins (without which, you can't properly use other vitamins) and ALL minerals. But constipation is a sign of an microbiome imbalance!

Enemas and colonics are barbaric, POTENTIALLY HARMFUL and COUNTER PRODUCTIVE. If God had meant us to take enemas, we would have been born with enema bags at our sides!

Every time you do an enema for BRIEF RELIEF, you are worsening damage to your microbiome. Read SUPER GUT and take probiotics and eat probiotic-rich foods (if you can tolerate them) and get off PROCESSED FOODS!

And all the other approaches your are using are hot out of the 1980s or 1990s (or earlier) NOT treatment based on what we now know about the small intestine and even the colon!

Your post has my head spinning in overdrive. I finally started the mind numbing, probably useless, reading through 475 online pages of my own health history. I saw the words gastrin and intrinsic, but at page only 59, I went dead. I can't wait to read all the posts, maybe tomorrow if my brain comes back on line. THANX for sharing ‼️Shelley

Shelley, rather than take advise from anyone, why don't YOU GET INFORMED? Because, if you want to find solutions, THEY WILL NOT BE IN OUTDATED, BARBARIC THINGS like enemas. You have to ask why your body is doing what other peoples' bodies are NOT doing, that points to understand what "modern" medicine and S.A.D. (the Standard American Diet) is doing to some people's digestive tracks. If your so "stinking tired," get out of the 20th century and avail yourself of research (including at our national laboratories) on the human genome and the human microbiome. Did you know, for example, that researchers are finding they can REVERSE some forms of diabetes by modifying diet away from carbs and sugar and adding specific probiotics? So, stay in the 1990s and 1930 or 1880s or enter the 21st century of healing the MICROBIOME!? READ SUPER GUT!

You might have pernicious anemia--meaning your immune system has DESTROYED your stomach's ability to produce gastrin--but you might have gone undiagnosed as doctors check B-12 levels AN INVALID TEST FOR ANYTHING! Get a blood test for gastrin levels (You don't even have to fast.) and intrinsic factor antibodies (You must fast.)

But you could just have S.I.B.O. or diarrhea-dominate or CONSTIPATION-DOMINATE bacterial overgrowth. A company in Boston does a quite valid test for about $300 that you can do by mail. For get your own health history (except what your instincts tell you because "modern" medicine is pretending you can only have what they PROFIT from treating. But you must get informed. It's a long process, but start with SUPER GUT and the writings of Dr. Gundry and anything you can find on S.I.B.O. But most of all, you MUST follow a SIBO DIET, which means don't be feeding the bad bacteria by eating refined carbs or sugar! (The book SUPER GUT explains that we Americans have gut entirely different, for example, that the guts of people in the Australian outback, WHO DO NOT HAVE OUR ILLNESSES!) You need probiotics but you need to read WHICH ONES and understand that things like grocery store yogurt is useless.

Kathleen,
Your replies to my posts are helpful and give more info to really understand. Except, I'm probably not supposed to say this on these forums but, I have felt like I was being reprimanded and kinda accused of being a stupid person who has never done any real research. Right or wrong, this is how I let your words really hurt. Shelley

Kathleen,
I looked up the pernicious anemia, vit B-12 connection. I have to clarify definitions about it. My normal everyday type of B-12 levels are 800-1900 over 7 years. But I need to learn more about what actual Vit B-12 is truly bioavailability is.
I do have iron deficiency, my body doesn't absorb well. I get my iron/ferritin in IV infusions as needed. I don't feel any difference before or after the infusions. I can't tell when it's low or high.
I have Celiac disease, pSS, both have already severely damaged my small intestines cuz, I was probably born with it, but not diagnosed until age 59, my villi are in really bad shape even after eating GF? My pSS has traveled to my lungs, it is a favorite spot for pSS to attack. I have been able to stop the spread and reverse some of the damage to my lungs, but not all. Again, I appreciate your knowledge, but I do know grocery store yogurt is useless for probiotics. Shelley
