Prostate cancer humor?

Posted by bluegill @bluegill, Aug 6 11:25am

Lately I've been vacillating between focused motivation and deep sadness regarding my future. I find that strange humor can be very helpful to knock me out of a funk (If there is a related thread, please direct me to it).

I just skimmed through some New Yorker magazines, and the cartoons there are delightfully absurd.

I also take great comfort in cat videos on Youtube, with "I am Maru" being my favorite.

I also like dark humor, but I might offend someone if I post some of that here.

So, what puts a smile on your face?

I tell my friends at golf that I have to get my hearing checked because I thought my urologist said there was a good chance I would be important after my prostatectomy. So I quickly agreed to it. Turns out he said impotent.

I like this guy for general goofy humor. https://www.youtube.com/@Voicesofjake/videos His Elmo voice is just too good. Also this guy makes old recipes with some adult humor thrown in https://www.youtube.com/@BDylanHollis/videos

I came home in a wheelchair initially (walking again now). When I didn't feel like doing something around the house, I'd crack my family up by shouting "But I have CANCER!" or "I"m DISABLED!" in a whiny Grandpa Simpson voice.

That helped them relax enough that they could talk with me about my cancer and disability openly and normally, without all the weirdness healthy, able people usually bring to the conversation.

Hey bud - I’m with you on this! I composed a little ditty to the song of ‘My Boyfriend’s Back - (and they say he’s gonna get’ya) about my recurrent PCa.
Wouldn’t DREAM of posting it; my wife threatened divorce if I sang it in front of her but it’s truly dark, hilarious, tragic and fun all at the same time.
This disease is funny by no means but my dread was pierced the day of my trans perineal biopsy. Situated in the stirrups with my legs bent behind my head and two pretty young nurses staring at my taint, I wished I could just f’ing die and get this humiliation over with.
Suddenly I heard a ripping noise and the urologist held up a length of surgical tape about 18” long and just stood there looking at me. I gasped and said ‘c’mon! You’re gonna tape my mouth shut?!’
“No, no….I’m going to tape your testicles to your belly to keep them out of my way.”
Well if that didn’t send me into paroxysms of laughter - I swear, the absurdity was just too much!! Ever since then my fear has been tempered, my modesty is non-existent and my ability to laugh instead of cry has made this a whole lot easier to handle. Thanks so much for bringing this up since it’s so important for getting thru those tough days!

Great stories, Phil, Tom, and North!

I tell young people I'm "in the Flow" because I now do Flonase and Flomax every day.

I'm also a "hipster," because I need a new hip.

Actually, I've been putting off the hip replacement for a while now. I want to see where this cancer thing is going. And I figure if I die from cancer, then I can have the hip replacement without any anaesthesia and I'd save a few bucks.

My wife doesn't think that's funny.

I have somewhat of a strange sense of humor anyway. My family tends to make jokes at very inappropriate times. My wife had an aneurysm at 42. My daughter had open heart surgery at 22. Now I have prostate cancer at 57. Humor has helped get us through it all. If we make other people uncomfortable, it is even better. Sometimes you just have to find what works for you. Screw everyone else.

Humor define in a God meaning short; Hu or Huwa (Arabic: هُوَ meaning “He”) is a name for God in Sufism.. so for me also a prostate cancer person Humor, "more God" is a very welcome way of being. Whether laughing or praying, It allows God to help me through the journey. Can't be anything wrong laughing at the cancer while God is with us. Best wishes, keep the humor. God bless...

Statisticians have a joke:

"Did you know that 100% of people who mistake correlation for causation eventually die?"

Something to keep in mind when we hear about alternative/new-age "miracle cures" for our cancers.

I'm an amateur stand-up and am adding some prostate cancer jokes to my set:

"I'm OK now, but when I first found out I had prostate cancer I went to the station to throw myself in front of a train. Fortunately, it was Amtrak so the train never showed up."

"I have a great support system. If I had $1 for every person who's helped me through this, I'd have $2.35."

"Prostate cancer awareness and testing is great, but please you still shouldn't let the guy by the bus station give you a prostate exam even if it's free."
