Any pre-injection tips for Tymlos?

Posted by esb13 @esb13, May 20 4:36pm

About to start Tymlos on Thursday. I know with Reclast a drink of water and 2 Tylenol before the infusion was helpful for absorption, side effects. Any similar pre injection tips from those who have been using Tymlos? Has anyone tried meclizine or another anti-vertigo drug to help with dizziness/nausea as body gets used to Tymlos?
Also - seeing here women talking about gaining weight and bloating on Tymlos - I haven't heard about this any where else. How bad is that? Being treated at a Boston Teaching Hospital and welcome this online community!

Sorry about that! A little dramatic there for a minute. After being on hold and going through three departments, hopefully will get additional needles…..sometime soon! 🤣. If not, I will get with doc and get a script for needles and try somewhere else. It will all work out!

@babbsjoy I did get needles at my local pharmacy with a PCP or endo script, if that ends up being needed. The specialty pharmacies that send us Tymlos seem limited to one kind of needle, probably the kind used in the study. But in the meantime you could use whatever you can get, according to my endo. They are often termed "insulin pen needles." They are even on Amazon!

Thank you! It may well come to that!

@babbsjoy I wanted to mention that alcohol swabs and a sharps container may be included in your prescription. My first rx I received Tymlos pen and needles. When I called for a refill for second pen they asked if I needed alcohol swabs/wipes and a sharps container. I said I didn’t know they were included. The rep told me someone is supposed to ask me each time I call for a refill. So far, she has been the only one to ask if I need them. I have employer insurance.

Thank you for the heads up! I did receive 30 days of alcohol wipes, and a sharps container. Sadly, only one needle 🤪. The pharmacist at the specialty pharmacy is trying to expedite the rest of the needles. He actually apologized profusely —which people just don’t seem to do anymore, and I appreciated it. I did ask if when I refill for the pen if the needle quantity will stay adjusted to the appropriate amount or if this would be a “thing” again. He said it will be an issue again and to emphasize with the person I speak to at refill that that needs to be changed—similar to what you are saying in terms of supplies….we will see! Thanks for checking in, I really appreciate it!

babbsjoy, good advice from your doctor. If you drink a glass of water prior, you might be getting up after an hour or so at night.
My blood pressure drops about 20mmHg systolic in the first hour. My heart rate picks up and giving me a sense of energy.
Just be careful about balance.

Thank you for your insights! I am hesitant to take it at night—just for the reasons you have pointed out! I usually have to try to not hydrate too much before bed, or it’s up and down frequently in the night. If the med brings dizziness, not a good combo! Never thought of being energized—doesn’t sound restful! Will see how it goes, good to be forewarned— thanks much.

Although I have finished my 2 years of Tymlos and always received alcohol wipe and needles in every 30 month supply, the last 2 months I only received 1 alcohol wipe with my order. Didn’t make sense…someone is dropping the ball at the other end. I had purchased a supply of needles and wipes myself just to have on hand so I didn’t bother contacting the specialty pharmacy. The pharmacy I used was always very helpful with questions or concerns I had. Contact them with any issues you might have. 🌹Rose

I will be starting Tymlos later this week, and am seeking any suggestions, tips, tricks that anyone would care to share. I am, of course, nervous! So far I think I have read: hydrate well before and eat something a bit salty, watch D3, consider taking it at night so as to sleep through side effects, take at a time I can lay down if necessary after, and the wonderful windy shores method of stepping up the dose if I can’t tolerate the full dose! Oh! And ultra fine needles if the ones I receive initially don’t suite….Anything else? Thanks!

Several posts recommend injecting in the thigh or butt cheek to avoid a puffy stomach. I tried this and it works for me! Stomach slimming down after a year if injecting in the belly fat.

I did Tymlos in belly and Evenity in thighs. My kid has type 1 diabetes. Insulin can be injected in tummy, thigh etc. but we were told absorption is fastest in tummy, so if sugars were high we would always do tummy. For that reason, I injected Tymlos in my tummy. Tummy did get a little puffy but it went away quickly. Fractures make my tummy stick out too because of changes in my spine!

Thank you for the info. I am very encouraged by your posts, and wish you health and healing! I just received my Tymlos prescription, and the needles (needles were delayed due to error)—should start this evening!
