Alpha lipoic acid for Neuropathy

Posted by bjbates53 @bjbates53, Oct 8, 2022

I have had CIDP for 20 years and have done fairly well. But when I have a setback, my legs are very weak. In the past, I have found ALA caps to help me a lot. However, I have reflux and can't tolerate it. A pharmacist suggesting putting the capsule inside an empty capsule and see if that would help. It did not. I take it with food and lots of water. Still causes problems. Has anyone tried ALA as a tablet and had success with it? Any other suggestions would be welcome. I also take Cerefolin NAC.

I take ALA and have noticed improvement. When I kid a dose my feet start to either go numb or start burning. I can notice a difference without it

I take alphalipoic acid and I didn’t think I had a problem with it. But I have been having a ton of stomach acid problems and now I’m wondering if this could be adding to it. I’m sorry I can’t be of help but you may have helped me. Thank you.

Nancy, I think the stomach problems and nausea is a common side effect of alpha lipoic acid for some people especially if they start off with a high daily dosage. Some people have found it helped to gradually work up to the higher doses and also make sure not to take it on an empty stomach. I take 1200 mg daily (600 mg morning/evening) as part of my supplements.

Interesting. Very interesting! (That's one of the joys of Connect. If you just show up, you'll often find an ongoing discussion that you'll find "interesting.") My neurologist invited me to try ALA more than a year ago (600 mg 2X daily, or 1200 mg). It was about that time that I began experiencing what I chalked up to acid reflux. Believe it or not, I never stop to think that the ALA might be to blame. When I told my neurologist that the ALA didn't seem to be having much of an impact on my PN, he told me to quit taking it. Then, four months ago, he suggested I try EB-N5, a medicinal food that, among other ingredients, contains ALA, and again is 600 mg 2X daily, or 1200 mg. For several weeks, I've been complaining of my self-declared acid reflux (especially during the night … after I'd taken a second EB-N5 cap at bedtime … on an empty stomach). I wish I could recall if I'd been spared this acid reflex during the interval: the months between quitting that first trial of ALA and beginning this current regimen with EB-N5. You can probably see why I found this ongoing discussion to be "interesting." Happy day, everyone! ––Ray (@ray666)

Thank you John. I have decided to discontinue it for at least a week to see if it gets better. I have to take several vitamins and minerals due to a very short small intestine. I’m discontinuing them all for a bit and if I feel better, I’ll slowly start adding them back one at a time. Thank you for your answer.

Hi friends, has anyone tried alpha lipoid acid and if so did you get any relief? I just listened to a webinar from Dr. Lewis who discovered Louis summer. It was very informative and he mentioned LAC. He said he didn’t believe there anything else would help. Dry much. I looked it up and it seems like it might help. We are so fortunate to have many people with all kinds of neuropathy. Sharing our experience and our expertise, as we know what works and doesn’t. I find this is so important and comforting. Thanks again everyone including the mayo clinic for hosting this site.

I've read a lot of the sites that have been recommended by the members of this group. So I can't remember where I saw it, but I read that taking Aceytl-L-Carnetine with ALA is supposed to be beneficial. I take one capsule of each morning and night. I mistakenly ordered regular ALA instead of R-ALA, so I'm using that right now. Does it work? Honestly, I don't know. I also take Benfotimine (B1) and 2500 mcg of B12.
I'm fortunate that I don't need the strong prescription meds at this point. I use OTC Naproxen, and Voltaren, and lidocaine cream. I have tried so many of the creams and lotions mentioned by others, I have quite a collection! I also use a small dose of CBD oil(no THC) before bed. Helps me sleep. I felt better for quite a while, but now the weather is changing and my feet are feeling worse again. I hope you can find something that gives relief. Keep trying differnt things and don't give up too soon.

alpha lipoic acid works great for my numbness and tingling in hands and feet… However, it is so upsetting to my digestive system. Decided I really want to take it either through a transdermal patch or a tincture.
Could not find transdermal patches, but have decided to make my own tincture and hears how
I bought a small bottle of food grade glycerin on Amazon.
Open up about six 1100 milligram Alpha lipoic acid capsules And shook the powder in
Shook well and take a dropper full and swish it around in my mouth so it reaches all of my buccal membranes.
Since alpha lipoid acid is both water and fat soluble, seems to work pretty well and have not had any stomach stress. I start very slowly with just one dropper full twice a day.
