Total knee replacement problems
I am really hoping someone can help. I had a total knee replacement 3 years ago (age 48) due to a motorcycle accident in my teens. I am in more pain than I was before. My knee constantly feels like there is an ace bandage wrapped around it. It is very tight, stiff, and painful. I did all of the PT and still can't straighten my knee any further than I could before. I have been back to my doctor twice about this problem and have gone to see a different doctor, and they both tell me some patients just don't do so well with knee replacements. This can't be the only answer! I am 51 years old and struggle to accept the fact that I will have to deal with this for the rest of my life. I have very tiny bones. I had a disc replaced in my neck and had to go back in 2 weeks later to have it replaced with a specially ordered disc because the smallest one this particular manufacturer makes was too big for me. It makes me think this might be the issue with my knee as well. Any advice?

Have you tried pool therapy. I found it helps significantly. My knees took much longer to recover after having second replacements. But I am 20 years older than you. Best wishes.
I would suggest googling to find the manufacturers of artificial knees. Then contact them and explain your problem. Doctors are too busy to do this. You are not the only person with small bones. I hope this idea pans out for you. Good luck !!!
This would be great if we had a pool or didn't live an hour away from the closest one. I love swimming and it would probably help. I may look into it regardless. Thank you!
That's a great idea that I never would have thought about myself. This is why I reached out. I knew people would have suggestions. Thank you!
Make sure you’re not allergic to bone cement/adhesives/acrylics. Doctors are finding out a lot of knee replacement problems are due to this allergy.
It is an easy test to find out. I know I have the allergy.
That wouldn't surprise me since I get 4 allergy shots every couple of weeks. I'm allergic to over 85 different foods/trees/weeds/grasses. I'll look into that as well. Thank you!
I think the key is to find a doctor who will listen to me and care about my issues.
I strongly suggest a second opinion by a very reputable ortho even if you have to drive or fly to see. And you at minimum need new X-rays and maybe an MRI.
The sizing of the TKR is vital and also their may be problems with the glue not adhering or even an infection. One personal note. Before surgery I spoke to the doctor and said MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT SIZE (please). He had to work with the rep and sure enough my actual size was in the 3 range. Very small.
My opinion is your problem is serious and damaging your quality of life and you need reputable help for a serious issue. I send you only my best in getting truly to the bottom of the matter.
I had tkr could not get much movement out of it … just like you after few months got second opinion was two sizes to big would have never gotten any further….,long story short had revision went from 65-70 now I am 100-105 I can do most things … I still have some pain and stiffness but I always will….good luck hope you find relief
Have call with surgeon to discuss MUA as I’ve been stuck since week 6 post op visit ( going on week 11).
Sought the 2nd virtual opinion offered by insurance with an orthopedic surgeon. He had my surgery report and images- he thought do MUA.
I reach good numbers in PT, but everyday I revert to 7* and 90* before I get stretching, cranking and pounding. So, are those real numbers? They don’t last. It hurts to walk and go down stairs. It’s been hurting in the front middle with walking from the start. Can’t have a good gait when my knee is flexed to begin with. This knee has more issues than my arthritic issues before surgery.
Surgeon mentioned he’d go down a femoral size for second knee during the 6 week check up when he wasn’t pleased that I wasn’t reaching 0* for extension. He mentioned the size was discussed during surgery (?). The second knee surgery is on hold.
So frustrating to know what is the right direction to go. My PT team is frustrated. They’re not sure a MUA will fix my issue ( is it a size issue)?
