Otezla

Posted by linza @linza, Aug 6 9:53am

I'm on otezla for serious itching from psoriasis. I've been on it for years. Their psoriasis made living absolute hell. Now that my bones are in such bad shape with osteoporosis, I'm wondering if I should just give up the otezla if it would help with my bones.
I haven't seen my bone doctor yet so I am just asking for opinions. Thank you.

Otezla may be helping your bones-- " Therapeutic potential of phosphodiesterase inhibitors in the treatment of osteoporosis. . . " The article is dense, but I send the link anyway. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33711307/
It is my opinion that you might ask your bone doctor about Forteo or Tymlos. There may be an interaction between the meds that I'm unaware of, but (for someone of little knowlege) they sound like a great combination.
Your medication is thought to inhibit osteoclastogenisis.
linza, this post may seem a little thick. If so, I'm happy to respond further.

Hello @linza and welcome to Mayo Connect. From your post, it appears that you think that Otezla is causing your bone loss. Is my understanding correct? I see that @gently has already responded to your post with some helpful information.

I searched various websites that discussed Otezla, and I did not find bone loss as a possible side effect, however it would be a good idea to talk with a specialist about your concern. Here is a link to an article about Otezla that gives information about possible side effects. I'd encourage you to take a look at it.

When you say that you will see a bone doctor are you referring to an endocrinologist or another type of specialist? A lot of us with osteoporosis, see an endocrinologist as they are one of the best type of specialists to deal with this disorder.

I look forward to hearing from you again. Will you continue to post with any questions or concerns?
