Does anyone suffer from Crohn's or colitis?

I got diagnosed with Chrons disease back in January I’m 56 years old got it unexpectedly from eating something that caused food poisoning and I never got better. Ended up in the ER in December and my body just shut down. I’m on the mend getting better everyday but I’m skeptical about the medication they put me on! Bad side effects!

Met with Gastro today. We are going to start a new course of Budesonide at the same dosage and tapering intervals as a newly diagnosed patient.

Thanks - I am already better. When I take the peak dose, i can actually feel my intestines relax. It’s an odd sensation. The doc thinks the relapse dose just wasn't high enough long enough. So we pulled back to a new diagnosis dosage for 8 weeks and then we will start tapering down.

Hello friend, I am so sorry I haven't reached out with questions. Unfortunately, I have very serious and escalating family issues. It is almost impossible to manage stress with this situation even with the best self management. I am also in the position of family counselor clearly not helping lymphocytic colitis. I have relapsed and been ill for 2 days- unable to leave my home. Back to BRAT diet. Gastro feels a "wait and see" approach first. I am sorry and will reach out when better.

I have been on a slightly modified BRAT diet for 3 months, so I get it. Good luck.

Its a diet recommended for inflamed colon and babies with nausea or diarrhea.

* Bananas
* White rice no butter
* Apple sauce or other canned, no fiber fruit, drained with no sugar added - like diced peaches
* Plain white (lowest fiber) toast

Plus overcooked (soft) non fibrous veggies. So no to brocolli and yes to green beans or potatoes or such, overcooked by ordinary standards

The idea is lowest fiber, avoiding sugar and sweeteners, fats.

If nothing else he might learn that there are as many versions of colon disorders as there are people with them. We aren't Docs but we can share our experiences that can sometimes be very helpful. Sometimes it's just good to know that someone else is going through your ordeal too.

Heres a more thorough description of my diet that I've had success with. I hope its helpful.

… This is the google search where I found it.

colon calming diet for IBD or colitis

It brings up several pages I found useful.

This has been my north star for several weeks and it is really helping. I eat a piece of white low fiber toast w/Manuka honey first thing in the morning. Two hours later i eat one scrambled egg with no butter and half a piece of toast. For lunch I have two slices rolled up of black forest ham and a bowl of plain white rice, salt only with one serving of canned diced peaches no sugar added, drained. For dinner I have a grilled turkey patty with steamed new potatoes no butter and overcooked green beans (I get the individual serving cups and microwave them).

I have been religious and i am much better but I am still taking 6-9 capsules of pepto bismol a day to get the benefit of its anti bacteria/anti inflammatory properties.

From the google link:

A colon calming diet for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or colitis can include different foods depending on whether you're experiencing a flare-up or not:

During a flare-up
Low-fiber foods are easier to digest and less irritating to the gut. You can try:
White grains or starches with less than 2 grams of fiber per serving
Well-cooked vegetables like green beans, carrots, mashed potatoes, asparagus tips, and pureed squash
Canned or soft fruits like peeled apples, bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon

Between flares
You can try eating a wide variety of foods, including:
Fruits and vegetables
Whole grains
Lean protein like lean meats, tofu, fish, and eggs
Low-fat and nonfat dairy products
High-calcium foods like yogurt, kefir, collard greens, and milk if you can tolerate lactose
Foods with probiotics like yogurt, tempeh, kimchi, miso, and sauerkraut
Healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil, and canola oil
