Any reverse shoulder surgeries out there?

Posted by sweaver61 @sweaver61, Jun 20 8:50am

Hi!! I had a massive tear in my rotator cuff and was told by a second opinion it could be repaired. So in Dec24 I had a repair done SLAP and tendon repair. The surgeon repeated several time, that it was a massive tear. After 6 months of PT, a bicep rupture Popeye and now a fall, I have a humerus head that has torn through the repair and caused more damage then before. I went back to the original surgeon and I am now having a reverse shoulder replacement in August.
After all the work and pain the repair should have never been offered. Has anyone had this surgery? What is recovery like?

Your story sounds familiar. I had an anatomical shoulder replacement that should’ve been reverse. I went to a new surgeon and he did a revision to a reverse replacement as my rotator cuff was torn. I have to say that the recovery from the reverse was much better, easier and faster than the first surgery. PT has been much easier too. Good luck!

@bommie, do you mean constant pain for all 8 months since the surgery, or a new unexplained pain at 8 months after feeling ok? If it is new pain, it might possibly be bursitis inflammation from overuse or trauma. My rTSR was fine, felt normal after about 8 months until I had a few days of hard use carrying and dragging heavy things, developed sharp pain with any sort of shoulder rotation motion, even slight elbow movement. It took about a month to resolve itself on it's own, by the time I got in for an appointment it was almost back to normal. You can still get muscle, tendon, and soft tissue pain from overuse, that have nothing to do with the replacement itself. My shoulder has been fine over a year since the incident.

I had a reverse total shoulder replacement two months ago. I am amazed at my fast recovery. I have had 7 weeks of OT and I do the exercises on days I don’t have OT on my own. I can do everything I want pain free and I only have mild pain with one of the exercises. I am age 77, diabetic and I take prednisone which can slow healing. My hip took months to be pain free. My surgeon is top notch and does shoulders every week. Choose a surgeon who does a lot and read reviews of him/her online. Best of luck.
