What test shows you don’t need RECLAST?

When do you know you don’t need RECLAST?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

In my case I had 3 Reclast infusions over a 5 year period. They reversed my early osteoporosis enough that I am now osteopenia based on my last DEXA bone density scan. I already take calcium, magnesium, D, etc and lift weights/hike so those help a bit with my 70 yo bones. I'll find out tomorrow what the endocrinologist says about if I need other meds/steps, but probably no more Reclast (I think 3 is the limit).

Does this mean that you took the Reclast at about 18 month intervals? I thought that the interval was one year? I would like 18 months better. What determines the intervals? Thx

The doctor determines. This is a discussion you need to have with your doctor and the infusion team. There are different protocals. We can't answer. I can tell you at UC Health they do a standard protocol one year apart. But now I am going to something different because I am on the Tymlos for two years. You don't do them together. There might be other protocals. You can also call the pharmaceutical company who makes the medication and ask them about various protocols. Good luck!

when your doctor tests and tells you - you don't, or after you've fulfilled the protocol.

good luck sounds like you are doing everything right. My understanding was three is the limit when you do the Tymlos (the complementary bone remodeling med). Reclast builds density and Tymlos slows down deterioration. So I do two years of tymlos, one annual reclast infusion for 3 years and then I'm done. That's the current protocol at UC Health. (I did one Reclast last year before they put me on the Tymlos. I stop reclast while doing the tymlos. Otherwise my understanding was I do the reclast every year until they say otherwise.

It was just how it worked out with my schedule. The Reclast actually works for more than a year, but is less effective as time progresses. It was good enough for me that I'm now at osteopenia stage. I lift a lot of weights and walk/garden/woodwork, take Ca and Mg, and all the other stuff we are supposed to do. Everyone is different regarding needs and meds.
