Remove lump even though mammo and ultrasound are negative?
I was diagnosed two years ago today. Two weeks ago I found a lump in my healthy breast. The diagnostic mammo and ultrasound are negative for cancer but my surgical oncologist wants to remove it to be 100%. He is a bit old school and doesn't rely on technology 100%. My breasts are dense and the mass is solid. I have autiimmune problems, chronic active Epstein Barr Virus and I'm 67. I'm looking for feedback.

Sounds like your provider wants to take conservative approach and remove. Some provider take the monitor it approach, but that leaves the patient wondering about and need for rechecks.
Over 10 years ago I had lump removed even though provider was sure non-cancerous, provider was correct, no cancer, but once out I did not have to worry about.
When I was diagnosed in cancer in one breast 5 years ago, the other had an area that imaging said not cancer, but I had it removed. Left small scar, and glad I had it removed.
Is there a reason you would not want it removed?
Thank you. That is helpful. I thought I read that once a breast is cut into it could actually activate cancer cells.
My surgeon is retiring in Sept. And I will miss him. He did give me the option to wait a
month. But that didn't make sense to me. Less waiting is better.
Ultra sound and mri the new lump breast. It may not have showed up as cancer on mammo. Your oncologist is right. I am a mammo tech and religiously got my mammo every year. A few months after mammo and ultrasound I felt a rock lump in left breast. I immediately went in for mammo and ultrasound. Mammo did not show lump 11mm. I had ultrasound and was neg I made tech redo ultrasound with my finger pointing to lump. They saw it but not on mammo. I had mri and it showed the cancer after i had lumpectomy it was 9mm after lumpectomy. I had ILC cancer. My surgeon explained that ILC is like cobwebs and does not necessarily show up on mammo. The xray of mammo machine may not show the tiny cobwehu6b configuration of the ILC. Anyway.. go with your oncologist being thorough have all the testing available. to you. It is vigilance the rest of your life that will get you through. Good luck!
MRI!
I had a lump removed 2 years ago because my doctor suggested I have it removed.i was told and agreed that it was better for me to just remove it so as to not worry.turns out I was told I have LCIS.I would have never known if the lump was not removed.
Good luck to you
I always ask my doctor if they are 100% sure that I don't have, -------. Fill in the blank for infection, tumor, cancer, blood clot, etc. If they can't say no, then I want tests. I know a woman who was sent home from the hospital because the doctor thought there was only a little chance she had an appendicitis. She had an appendicitis, and had to return in an ambulance. Another was having a heart attack. Doctor finally caught it in time. Go to hospital that does core biopsies, for breast tumors. Get checked out!
I also had lobular - 2cm and ultrasound showed nothing. I got totally lucky as fab radiologist didn't like what he saw in area of very dense breasts - years ago suspicious also and I wished I had asked for MRI. This time I did which showed it as 2cm - I had a lumpectomy at 57 yrs olds , followed by 20 rounds of radiation including a boost and my margins weren't excellent (common for lobular) - I have been on Letrozole for almost 2 yrs and will see my oncologist in October. Even at Dana Farber, highly ranked cancer center in Boston I had to beg for an MRI.
Request an mri.
Request ultrafast mri. Have your oncologist surgeon speak to radiologist about ultra fast mri of breasts.
Also they have ultra fast breast mri now. Get one.
Have your oncologist surgeon request it for you.
