I should also add that my hearing loss is only moderate so streaming audio directly to the hearing aids is maybe nice but not necessary

Sorry, I’m just thinking this through. If the Bluetooth on your phone was connected to the now dead hearing aids it may have been directing the audio to the Bluetooth outlet rather than the phone’s speakers. Disabling Bluetooth should fix that.
