The active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk. I buy it at health food or regular grocery stores. I just take it with a lot more water than Metamucil recommends and it works for me, but every GI tract is different. One has to sign up online for Silver Sneakers; I don't think you can sign up for it at a gym, but once you have a card you can use it at participating centers even if you travel.

Found and interesting link today. It seems counterintuitive that an agent that adds bulk and moves things along one's intestines would be good for colitis, but psyllium husk may have protective mechanisms for colitis and some kidney disease by impacting (hmm) bile production and retention of some salts that are not good for CKD.
