Hi, Jake. The science behind macrobiotics in general has much to do with acid-base balance. I recommend the writings of George Ohsawa if you wish to go into greater depth. As for why braising (this cooking method) is effective from a scientific point of view, I’m sure there are reasons on which I’m not fully versed, but my gut feeling (no pun) is that it infuses just enough water into the vegetables to maximize softness without diluting their nutrients, which also maximizes flavor, thus making them a delicacy the consumption of which is a pure pleasure. I just know that they work wonders for me in terms of results. Also, don’t worry if they produce “floaters,” as this is natural once your gut is clean.
Well, I have been researching anything that can return my regular BM since my intestinal prolapse surgery in October and now I am becoming more than a little concerned. I also read Dr Gundry's excerpts from his book and I think he sounds like he just wants money from people. Not an expert as he calls himself. I don't know what to use anymore because nothing is really working.. Doctors have prescribe the Miralax, Lactulose, Bisacodyl, Phillips Milk of Magnesia (yuk) and other over the counter things- such a waste of money .... the list goes on... I was so desperate last week I bought one of those liquid enema apparatus kits.. but I felt it was too dangerous and that I may harm myself even further... my PCP suggested eating 2 Kiwi's Fruits and at least 64 ounces of warm lemon water per day.. Apparently Kiwi's are the new "Prunes" Yoga and different types of twisting exercises sometimes gets things moving a bit, but none of this gives me the relief that is needed to be normal. I am literally full of ___ !! Today I decided I am no longer eating because it is not being eliminated properly. I can't go on this way any longer.. Each doctor seems to be of no help. This is such a condition that is difficult and embarrassing to talk about, even to a gastrologist .. I don't know... I feel something is terrible wrong.. Please, does anyone have any have any other suggestions about what I can do this weekend? Thank you so much for any response 🙁
For constipation, try cabbage water. Cook the cabbage in water, Cool it and drink the water.
Dr Gundry might be right about lectins in certain foods causing leaky gut syndrome?
I'm so sorry that you feel miserable. Being constipated is a horrible feeling. If you haven't already tried this idea...Grandma wasn't wrong when she said, "A prune a day keeps the doctor away". Try either a 6-8 oz glass of prune juice every morning or mix it with 4 oz of coffee. Both stimulate the bowels. You may need a few days depending on how backed up you are.
Call the doctor you trust the most and share your concerns. There are medical conditions that can result from intestinal surgery such as a paralyzed illius that need to be addressed.
Never be afraid or embarrassed to discuss what is concerning to you. It's your life.
No. I have not tried Prunelax... I currently use Miralax because it's tasteless and can go into things like coffee... My PCP recommended Kiwi's instead of Prunes... and eating two of those a night before bed does sometimes work in the morning... But I have not heard of Prunelax... I'll look for it ... thank you

Stool softener. I had the same problem. Now I proactively use every day. Also use magnesium tablets every day. Recommended dose on both are good enough. If not, extra stool softener is needed. If really stopped up, I use epsom salt water.
Agreed. I put a tablespoon in Greek yoghurt overnight in the fridge and love to eat it for breakfast. Delicious and so good for us. So many ways to use chia seeds. I also like eating rolled oats porridge. Again, so good for digestion and nutritious.

I am so very sorry to hear of your suffering with constipation despite everything you’ve tried from strong OTC medications to yoga to foods.
During Folfiri and Avastin I suffered from diarrhea which we managed to get on top of. Learned that it SO much better than having constipation.
I had part of my colon removed as part of cytoreductive surgery and I now and again go through awful bouts of constipation. I don’t like using the medication because while still effective with me I’m so worried my colon will stop working by itself.
I tried stopping all medication and going back to a very basic bland diet such as oat porridge (it has lots of soluble fibre as well as nutrients), drinking lots of water, yoga exercise for constipation and walking lots. So far I do feel better but early days.
With all you have been through it seems you need a GI doctor and testing to find out if there is something structurally wrong that might be fixed (eg surgery - my friend was diagnosed with an extra loop of colon).

I eat kiwi as well although I’m not sure why our doctors say it helps. kiwis have 2 grams of fiber prunes have 12.
@misssuezq how many prunes do you need to eat to get twelve grams of fibre?
1 cup pitted prunes

I will put a plug in for chia seeds. They help keep your digestive track moving while providing antioxidants and vitamins. https://www.healwithfood.org/nutrition-facts/chia-seeds-value.php
