STOP! Don't do this if you have osteoporosis
I am starting this thread hoping people will post things they've done that they have regretted, for one reason or another, when suffering from osteoporosis.
I'm going to start the conversation with a list of things we've learned already, and we are newbies!
1. Lift objects heavier than recommended by your physician (for my husband, that means nothing heavier than 5 pounds right now, with 3 fractures).
2. Don't bend at the waist! He got a fracture bending to empty the dishwasher.
3. Be cautious when driving - avoid rough roads, bumps, and go very slow over speed bumps.
4. We had planned to go on a boating tour (on a commercial fishing boat) on the ocean. After seeing a boat rocking and bouncing over choppy water we decided not to go.
5. Do not slouch when sitting in a chair or couch. If you're going to rest for any period of time on a couch elevate your legs (per our physical therapist).
6. Do not try any exercises until you have cleared it with your doctor, especially before your doctor confirms your fracture is stable.)
Please add to the discussion. I think this could be useful to people, especially people new to this.

I am no expert, but it seems to me that in any chair, perhaps a little lumbar support might be helpful, and bent knees would always help when bending near the waist. Many recliners offer a gently bent knee when reclined.
My sister broke so many bones I lost count, and I know how challenging that can be. Still sending support and best wishes. ♥️
@mlwh
Our reclining couch offers the gently bent knee you mentioned. And it provides lumbar support and the neck is adjustable.
I’m sorry to hear that about your sister. It’s not a pleasant journey. Thank you for the good wishes.
Forteo builds bone. Prolia works by stopping bone loss. It is important to build the bone first.
What suppliments do you take for your osteoporosis?
Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Calcium along with my VitD and added calcium to get my docs recommended dosage. This works for me, maybe not for everyone. Sometimes it's hard to find, sells out quickly.
@isabelle7
I am in the same boat as @isabelle7s husband. I broke a rib in my sleep .... and my femur bending over to pet the dog .. .and my vertebrae from coughing while putting on deodorant.
And I am on the same restrictions. I manage short walks and do my PT. Likewise, I pull forward in parking lots and go to great lengths to avoid a left hand turn so I don't twist my spine at all. And 5 lbs? Geez ... that's less than a gallon of milk, not to mention a full coffee carafe.
BORING!!! But ... better safe than sorry.
In the meantime, I am taking my Evenity shots and hoping that within a few months my bones will be stronger. I can't wait to 'live dangerously' and buy a gallon of milk all by myself.
I have osteoporosis, previously to taking Reclast it was "severe" after three years of Reclast infusions it improved somewhat. I had spine surgery in March for Stenosis which caused me to have throbbing calf muscles that prevent me from sleeping. A pain management dr gave me a Dospak of Methylprednisolone, 4 mg to tak for five days. I didn't take it because I thought it would have a negative impact on my Osteoporosis. The Dr said if I only take it once it won't be bad. I don't know if I should trust him or not. I am continually shrinking. I was 5'1 " twenty years ago, now I am only 4' 9 in. I don't want to keep getting shorter and shorter. No one I know has shrunk as much as I have. What do people think ?
@annie1 I have been told that a dose under 5mg for a relatively short period of time is fine. A dose pack usually starts at 60mg. Are you sure of the dose prescribed?
I have had severe osteoporosis as well and have shrunk as much as you! Has your doctor ever prescribed a bone builder like Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity? Do you have an endocrinologist?
I recently had to take a Medrol Dose pack for a sinus infection with Augmentin. My osteoporosis dr. said it would not be a problem. She said, if necessary, up to 4 Medrol Dose packs can be taken in one year. Thankfully for me, I don't think I'll need more.
@juanitalinda
Well you do understand what he's going through!! I don't think people who haven't been through it can really realize how limiting it can be. And how you have to watch every single thing you do for the fear of another fracture. I can't believe you fractured in your sleep, or bending to pet your dog, or even from coughing while putting on deodorant. I'm happy to hear you're on Evenity shots and I really hope they work for you. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to lift a whole gallon of milk? I'm always reminding my husband what 5 pounds is. It's not much! We've made so many adjustments around the house and with pretty much everything we do. Still, he's doing some things that worry me like dragging a very VERY heavy trash can across the street. I told him I'd do it but I hear him out there now doing it himself. Makes me cringe!! He goes in for a follow-up xray of his spine tomorrow to see if the fractures he has have stabilized and I am praying he doesn't have any new ones. I just asked him about the trash and he said he's pulling the trash, not lifting, not bending. It's on wheels but it's very heavy. Maybe it's OK?? We shall see. We meet with the physical therapist again this week and I'll have to ask.
Yes it's very boring but fractures are not something to mess with.
