Damage from Iovera Nerve block prior to TKR
I had right TKR 18 weeks ago. Prior to surgery I had lower leg neuropathy and a neurologist could not determine why after testing (you're part of the 20% of the population that gets it for an unknown reason she said). My surgeon recommended the Iovera nerve block prior to surgery because it would help with pain after the surgery. He said that the nerve block would last for about 3 months. I had no problem when the injection was done, minimal bruising and my leg was numb. It's now been more than 3 months later and I still have numbness going all the way down the inside of my thigh to my knee and when I touched the skin it feels like someone's taking a razor blade and slicing my skin open. I'm also having problems when I bend my leg in certain ways or touch my leg in certain spots I start get sharp nerve pains down on my lower leg. I don't know if this is from the Iovera injection or not. And I have a feeling nobody's really going to tell me. Has this happened to anybody else? I already had a chronic pain condition before surgery and if I had known that I would feel the way I do now I don't think I would have had my knee replaced!

Also, my surgeon is only numbing the 'deep genicular' nerves, a total of 3 injections. I know some doctors do up to 5 injections. How many were yours?
Hi
The surgeon does not do it but the PA does...Many many people have had it done with him and had no issues ...The surgeon is a Knee Guru and I did not think there would be a problem with him as he has been with the Dr 20 years....As I said I normally research things to the ends of the earth and did not this time ...and honestly I do not know why
M whole right leg hurts to the touch ...fabric hurts ....part feels like it has fullness to it and sometimes I feel like I am being electrocuted with zaps so bad it makes me jump and scream
Of course this past week they were closed from Thursday till tomorrow and I cannot do anything till then.
Thank you for your kindness
To be honest I do not know but the electric shocks actually make me scream out loud ..I only can hope that I can get into this office sometime this week because I need to find out what he did ...
The knee pain I had is nothing compared to this
I was scheduled to have my LTKR on May 2,2023 and i got iovera injection on April 14th 2023. In about a week, i had unbearable pain in my left leg with spiders crawling or pins and needles like pain all over the leg that kept me awake for three nights so i cancelled my surgery. The pain subsided in about a month or two but numbness lasted almost for 8 months. Recently, i did Robot assisted LTKR at Mayo without iovera and i am much pleased with the surgery outcome and recovery.
I’ve also had a TKR and a Revision 13 Months later due to the Nickel allergy. It’s still Not right. But those shocks could be what I’m experiencing, I do have RSD, which explains the weird feeling of clothes touching. Also, there’s Nerves that could be pinched when sewed or glued back after Surgery. Just some ideas as I’ve had so many Surgeries and can feel what you say. They burn, pinch and at times like an itch under the skin. So I’m always jumping and jerking when my episodes happen which could be many times a day. I’m fixin to get a Nerve Block to see if it’ll help. This is just ridiculous. My knee is worse than it was before the initial knee Surgery. How long has it been since your surgery ? I feel for ya and so many alike. I’m doing everything right I’ve done numerous PT’s nothing helps it. The nerves and muscles are flared up. I’m going to ask next visit about what chemicals are in the Glue they used to put in place inside. I’m allergic to a few other things. So I hope none of those are in the compound. Cross fingers, Nerve Block is 2 weeks away. God Bless 🇺🇸
I have had both nerve blockers and the nerve's burned/ablation. I won't ever have them burned again.... i find the blockers work better. It is done with the same implement apparently so it makes me wonder if they actually burned the nerve's. I had numbness and tingling for a few months in my neck... it actually felt hot as well. Maybe just double check which they did because i don't get that feeling with blockers and they work so much better for pain in my opinion anyway
Cathleen I would not recommend this to an enemy
It is 13 days and the pain is horrible
Swelling is still there and so are the black and blues
I cannot touch the skin on my knee....fabric hurts ...water from the
shower hurts
I am finally going into the office today to again see the PA as this was for pre op
which only God knows is not happening .....I need to know what he did to me
somehow ...It is awful
My pain was horrible for the first 2 weeks. Very swollen and bruised. Used my ice machine non stop. I think that is why the bruises sisappeared so quickly. My knee was very sensitive to my blanket. Its not nearly as sensitive now-13 weeks po. The only pants I can wear are capri type leggings. Denim or cotton pants feel weird on the scar. I did not have trouble with water touching it.
Please let me know what he says to you! My injection won't be happening until the end of August...I realize that many people have reactions for so many different reasons, and I am in that 'place' now where I'd rather just not have the TKR. My pain/discomfort is totally 'doable' with cortisone shots, but they wear off at beginning of month 3 - but I've just read about a slow reaction cortisone that should last longer, so I might check that out. My pain that led me to a TKR was a torn meniscus that I chose not to repair, that led to osteoarthritis under my kneecap. We just got back from the Colorado River with family, and I got on and off of the boat with no problem, etc, and keep telling myself that I should not do a TKR until I am in so much pain that I can't stand it! Also, one other thing...I knew there was a small percentage of people that may have side effects such as yours with Iovera...so I will need to make the choice, when I'm ready for a TKR, if I want to take that chance..I am SO sorry that you have had to go through this. My surgeon only does 3 shots, and in the deep genicular nerves...was yours the genicular nerves or the peripheral nerves?
Cathleem
I have no idea
My leg is very black and blue on the thigh and hurts like heck
When you go lower towards the knee it also hurts alot and is black and
blue on either side ...not as bad as the thigh.....I CANNOT TOUCH THE SKIN
as it hurts so bad ...
He said I might have hit something or stunned a nerve ...Did not explain ..Told me it only happened a couple of times since he has been doing it ...Oh sure...
Told me the only way it will go away is to let him redo it and I told him NO WAY ...I could
never go thru that again ....Gave me an Rx for Gabapentin ???????????
I have been putting an ice sleeve on which feels good but when I take it off because it loses it's coldness it goes back to how it felt ..
I postponed the surgery ...At this point I am not sure what I will do
This is the last thing I expected ...and I am so miserable now
I hope you have no issues or pain if you do it ......I am bone on bone so I really do not have
too much choice
