Metal Allergy - Metal Clips in the Ascending Colon Post Colonoscopy
Prior to pulmonary vein stents (platinum and iridium) being inserted, testing revealed that I am allergic to metals (nickel, cobalt and palladium). It is noted on my medical records. Recently, during a colonoscopy two metal clips (containing nickel and cobalt), were inserted into the ascending colon (after polyp removal). After being informed that the metal clips were inserted, I spoke with the doctor and expressed my concern because of the metal allergies. He “guaranteed” me that nothing would happen and that the clips would be gone in 2-3 weeks. Within a week after insertion, I was admitted to ICU for internal bleeding. The CT scan confirmed that there was no diverticulitis and it is likely to be the metal clips. The bleeding stopped within a few days and I have had X-rays to confirm that the clips are there and in the same position. It has been 7 weeks and I am in pain daily - between a 3 and 10. My life has changed drastically. The doctor (same one that inserted the clips) would like to do a colonoscopy to remove the clips and said that if the colon wall is damaged during the procedure that he does not know what to do to repair it. I told him that I am not comfortable with that and would like to consult with my other GI doctor prior to moving forward. My questions is, does anyone know a doctor that has successfully removed metal clips from the colon?

Hello @bcohen256 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I can understand your concern in finding a doctor who can perform this procedure as safely as possible.
While I don't have any experience like yours, or names of doctors who might do this, I would strongly suggest your scheduling a consultation at a major research-oriented health care system such as Mayo Clinic (here is a link to appointment information at any of Mayo's three locations, http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63). If a Mayo appointment is not possible, I would then recommend a facility like a university medical center. When you call, explain the problem and see if they have anyone who you can consult with about the safe removal of these clips.
Outside of the pain, what other symptoms are you experiencing? Are you able to eat normally?
Thank you for your response. I am not eating normally and have lost about five pounds - eating things that are easy digest. The pain is debilitating at times and I need to get the metal out. My doctors are at a major research-oriented health care system in Boston. Do I need an appointment to have a consultation with a doctor at Mayo? I would fly out to have this done if I am comfortable after the consult.
