Z-line was regular and was found 39 cm from the incisors

I had an EGD procedure and the report said: “The z-line was regular and was found 39 cm from the incisors.” What does this mean? Does it mean I have something wrong?

Your z-line is normal, check out this post to read more about it:

Beebe, thank you for your response. After the procedure the doctor never mentioned anything about my esophagus or upper part of my stomach. He said the Gastric Antrum looked a little irritated so he was going to do a biopsy, it came back as mild gastritis/gerd. Some lady in his office called me 3 weeks after the procedure and said I had Barrett’s esophagus based off my report. The gastro doctor, my doctor, and my sister who is a clinical RN for a gastro office read the reports and never mentioned Barrett’s Esophagus. I asked my sister if it shows Barrett’s in my reports and she said no. The report said: z-line was regular and was found 39cm from the incisors. The exam of the esophagus was otherwise normal. The cardia and fundus was normal on retroflexion. Patchy mucosa in the gastric antrum (biopsy). The exam was otherwise without abnormality. I don’t get where this lady came up with that.

The 39 cm from incisors just refers to how far the Z line is from your teeth. It’s just a measurement taken by the markings on the scope. Medication to reduce the acid production in stomach, like omeprazole, should clear up the mild gastritis and you should be fine.

Slkanowitz: thank you for your response and recommendation to take omeprazole. After some research I read that the finding of the z-line on an EGD is a normal finding. Since mine said Z-line was regular (meant it was normal)? And since I’m around 5’10” in height a 39 cm is normal? If I read it right it’s people with “irregular” z-line’s that could have Barrett’s Esophagus? Thanks again for your response, this was helpful.

Yes, regular Z line = normal and 36-40cm is normal range for distance. I didn’t mean to recommend you take Omeprazole for the gastritis. You need to hear results from your GI Dr and follow his recommendations. I was only citing that as an example of potential treatment. Sorry I wasn’t more clear in my comment. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for more information on the Z-line. No worries on the omeprazole topic. My GI doctor actually prescribed omeprazole for me.

I had a z line it was 30 it was in the 40s I'm in my 30s and my student GI doctor said that was normal and she didn't prescribe any anti-acid medicine for me 2 years ago and I had irritation in my stomach lining and she's like nope you don't have any acid reflux so I thought that was off so cuz she put that but I had that and they were saying everything was normal so I thought that was odd but they said that was just part of a normal and everybody has that. She's like well everybody has that so don't worry about that I'm just to let you know I'm 36 I was at 35 at the time
