Working through rotator cuff rehab while receiving IMRT

Posted by cs2024 @cs2024, Jul 2 8:54am

This is a little different but wandering if anyone has gone through this situation before. I had rotator cuff surgery 2 weeks ago and will be starting rehab 2 days a week for the foreseeable future. I am scheduled to start my simulation for my 28 sessions of IMRT on July 29th. I am interested in completing my radiation therapy while still doing rehab. Both my surgeon and my radiation oncologist believe it’s doable. If you have done this or something similar I would appreciate hearing your comments.

Yes, very similar (SBRT rather than IMRT). My PC metastasised to my spine before it was detected, and compressed the spinal cord until I was paraplegic. For the first round of radiation, to the spine post-surgery, I was completely paraplegic (they had to lift me on and off the table). For the second round, I was in a wheel chair, and could do my own transfer to the table with a bit of help.

100% doable, but physical rehab it does amplify the challenges a bit. I was doing physio all the way through both (and can walk again now). Unlike chemo, radiation doesn't generally tire you out, so that's a help.

My radiation was salvage radiation so likely the dose was a little lower, I worked out in the gym everyday after treatment. I'd say PT for a shoulder is very doable at that time.

I appreciate you letting me know your experience. I always thought it would add stress to my body and I might have some scheduling issues but I would really like to move forward in regards to both treatments. I am really glad you are doing better and back to being able to walk again. Hang in there and keep fighting.

@cs2024, this may be obvious, but make sure your physio-therapist is aware of you cancer diagnosis and that you are in treatment. If adjustments are necessary, they can accommodate accordingly.

Life. Full of challenges! So, a slightly different situation - but there may be some parallels... I'm 63. I had a brutal mountain bike crash on June 12, 2023 - completely severed my acromial-clavicular ligament and tore 2 others where the scapula connects to the collar bone (rotator cuff was spared)... I was diagnosed July 5 with PC. Scheduled for laparoscopic RP surgery August 23. This has been a challenging process. The RP was a bit rough with challenges presented by a 12-year previous laparo hernia surgery which left "mesh" in the path for the laparo RP, which made the surgery longer and the access and cutting more difficult... Anyways, I had about 2 weeks of prescribed down time post-surgery, but I immediately went back to shoulder rehab exercises - mobility and strength-work - bands, balls, light weights, TRX, etc. - also pelvic floor rehab started at the same time... this has been a challenging process, but doable while applying "common-sense" to my body's feedback - backing off if necessary, accelerating where possible. The process continues a year later with shoulder rehab continuing - I was not offered surgery but have done physiotherapy, red light therapy, platelet-rich-plasma injections - all in an effort to rehab the shoulder. It has improved but remains somewhat compromised. I continue with pelvic floor exercise - red light therapy, kegel exercises, etc., and continence, etc. has improved. I am back mountain biking and doing full push-ups, pullups, overhead kettlebell presses, and shoulder mobility and strength is good - albeit there remains structural compromise at the A-C joint. I guess my message would be do what your body allows you to do - listen to it - but, there will be times of "discomfort" that can be pushed through and progress will be made. I wish you the very best with both the rotator cuff injury and the PC!
