What helped you with anal irritation during bowel movement?
My proctitis is not as severe as what I have seen mentioned on this site as I only have pain involved but it is pretty painful sometimes--I use the ointment "Proctol" along with a sitz bath with salty hot water--I just wondered if anyone out there has tried any other remedies--thanks

@grizwalsh, have the ointment and sitz baths helped? How long has it been since finishing treatment?
Yes--they relieve the irritation but it seems that I have to do it a lot more as I age--I had the radiation 8 years ago--I had a colonoscopy a while ago and they said my proctitis is minimal but it still burns sometimes
Is Proctol stronger than cortisone 10?
I don't know-never tried it--Proctol needs a prescription here in Canada

1 ReactionI had some serious irritation after constipation following hernia surgery (more complicated following a prostatectomy 3 years ago and radiation 40 years ago). The doc recommended this. It says it's for diaper rash. Has been great. "Medline Remedy Essentials PROTECT, Zinc Oxide Paste Skin Protectant"

Not sure if you can get it in the states but anhydrous lanolin, also known as wool fat was particularly helpful for me when I had hemorrhoids during treatment
