Any suggestions to help with blood bruising on arms?
I’ve developed a pretty severe problem with blood bruises on my arms.
It started about 18 months ago and hasn’t stopped with diligent healing lotions, sunscreens, bruising creams, etc.
I recently saw a dermatologist who did a biopsy with negative results. He recommended continuing my regimen of lotion and sunscreen. I was disappointed he couldn’t help me more, but maybe there isn’t more he could do? A few months ago at an annual checkup I had comprehensive blood tests done and everything looks good. I’m not taking blood thinners or anything that would cause my capillaries to break so easily.
It’s so severe that I can tap my arm on something and it leaves a mark. My dog recently (accidentally) kicked her back legs off my upper arm and tore the top layers of skin off which left bad cuts and bruising from my forearm to my shoulder. I ended up at urgent care after it became infected and then 7 days on antibiotics. It’s healing but takes so long.
I’m dedicated to putting quality lotions and creams on my arms and I wear sunscreen when outside. I purchased sleeves to wear when outside working on my yard. I try to avoid the sun whenever I can.
I spent plenty of time in the sun growing up. I loved water sports and live close to the beach. But for the past 25 years my exposure has been limited. It seems this issue came on after I stopped taking pain medications and started using ibuprofen for pain. Recently, after reading that ibuprofen can thin the blood, I switched to acetaminophen. I haven’t seen any change yet.
Just last night I pushed a chair in at a dinner table and the top of my hand tapped the underside of the table, I now have a blood bruise across the top of my right hand. It seems like every day I have a new bruise.
I feel like my life is limited to avoiding the sun and hiding my beat up arms! Summer is here and I’d love nothing more than to be able to go outside in short sleeves and enjoy the day without getting stares at my horribly bruised arms! I know this is common with old age. I’m 65 and feel like I’m too young for the severity of bruising.
Is there anything that has helped anyone with this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi Paula, Amen to your post! I’m grateful for a lot of things which helps me keep my head up and looking forward to a new day. I realize aging isn’t always easy. I do the best I can and try to remember to hand the rest over to Him!
I woke up this morning and promptly caused a new cut and bruise on my right elbow, not on purpose of course. I’m grateful for my arms, so it’s not all bad!
Oh, @anne4u We are twinsies! My arms look the same as yours! Just last night I had finally gotten my left arm almost cleared up. Then I hit the corner of a cabinet as I reached to grab a box. Yep, a new bruise and tear. Sigh....
I thought I might try some arnica gel on the bruises.

Hi @anne4u !
Thank you for the photo! Helpful!
Your bruises are not anemia! You knew that.
They do resemble grandpa’s skin but not as young as you.
I would next try to remember when it started and maybe it’s an allergic response?
We autoimmune compromised folks can become allergic to ALL KINDS OF STUFF. Stuff that was previously very helpful.
My mom has a big red stain from an iron infusion that colored her upper arm blue. It’s more like the color of a wine birthmark on her upper arm. It is fading. Plus she’s 80 and doesn’t socialize much since her Parkinson’s symptoms started. So she said it doesn’t bother her. But it would bother me! She is suffering from bipolar disorder and it is EXAGGERATED by the Parkinson’s. Everyone is challenged! She and I share some symptoms and trip on the same step. 🙃.
She is emotionally abusive at times, but that is not new. It’s just different. I only notice because I see mom every day.
She has SEVERE DEPRESSION currently but is too uncomfortable to pick on me. 👍
Congratulations on the weight loss! And for getting those products far from your cells.
Your arm is not reflective of weight loss flab. I promise.
While it may not be a threat to your health, I agree with you that your blood blister bruises are not normally seen on someone our age yet. Time flies so we don’t have forever to try eliminating anything that might be a trigger before we ARE old enough and move on to the next ailment.
While we probably have bigger problems according to our overall list of things, you are working on your self care! That’s a WIN for YOU 🫵!
I would not drop the subject but I have not yet been educated on the thin skin and causes for premature skin thinning.
Have you googled “thin skin bloody bruising on arms”?
I’m glad your overall health is improving/stable for you.
And I’m glad you’re feeling well enough to investigate the blood bruising !
I hope you find the cause AND POST IT.
Best,
Laurie
Hi, Anne! My husband has this too, and I think it’s due to him taking blood thinners. I think he’s on an aspirin a day and blood thinners for his heart (I think he’s on a statin.)
Anyway, are you on blood thinners too? I know that eating a vegan diet or mostly plant based with lots of antioxidants can help with your blood as well, and then maybe you can ask the doctor to lower your dosages, if your diet can help fix things? I’ve always believed in using food as thy medicine. I do believe that in most if not all cases of illness…foods can help and heal our bodies. I’m not sure of your diet, but I would eliminate processed foods, sodas/fruit juices, alcohol and any other foods that you’re allergic or sensitive to. I’d also buy all organic and cut out all gluten. Increase foods that help the gut microbiome and have a large variety of foods, lots of leafy green veggies, blueberries, walnuts, a little dark chocolate! And make sure that you’re not spiking your blood sugar. Exercise more and meditate, too! For healing the bruises, maybe try cool compresses, arnica and/or CBD creams/lotions. Also, increase muscle mass with some strength training. Best to you!! Feel better!!! Mia 👍👍🙏🙏💕💕🌸🌸
I too am a retired RN. I too got the bruises. If you check them as in press against, do you feel 'pain' like a bruise or is it just there looking like a bruise? I was getting them on my arms as well as my hands. I was taking daily Asprin 81mg as well as for pain Aleve (naproxen) and Ibuprofen. I use Tylenol for pain now and have dropped daily Asprin. 'Bruises' have mostly stopped. I am not sure if that will help you.

Thanks Mia, I appreciate your suggestions! I’ve done many of the things you recommend. The changes in diet as well as other things helped change my struggle with sever pain from fibromyalgia. I’m doing much better. Although I still have some pain and fatigue about 1/2 the time which slows me down. I’ve got some pretty serious back issues so that’s my next hurdle. I’m receiving injections now but may have to do something more drastic to alleviate back pain. It all definitely slows me down at times. Regardless, I keep moving forward.
I do meditate, have for a few years now. I walk my dog everyday so that gets me out for exercise. I have an inversion table for my back and a good ice pack! I’m a pretty positive person and I know attitude helps with it all. I stay interested and educated in what’s best for me. We never stop learning!
I also stopped ibuprofen. That is the only thing I was taking that could have contributed to thinning my blood. I seem to go in cycles with the bruises, they almost clear up then a new batch cover my arms again! As careful as I try to be, my arms are so sensitive now they’re unavoidable.
I hope you get some back relief real soon!! I know massage, warm water, and heating pads can help a lot too!! Take good care! Mia 🌸💕🌸💕🙏🙏🙏
long sleeves help a lot to resolve embarrassment
I’m in the process of packing up my home to move, not helpful on the arm bruises for sure!
