Nerve pain after having shingles

I had shingles last year on one side of my face—on and in my nose, mouth and lower eye. The pain was awful and the itching was worse. No remedy worked at all, until I read about capsicum. Hubby bought me a tube of Capzasin quick relief gel for arthritis pain at the grocery. It was the best thing I tried for pain and especially the itch, not 100% relief but it certainly helped. Patches have the advantage of no hands application (it’s hard to wash off and very strong) but they’d probably need to cover the whole area. The Capzasin has a sponge applicator built into the tube for easy use.
If the pads are 8% and the gel is only 0.025%, I’d certainly give them a try, if he can bear the touch. My heart goes out to your husband. Shingles may not be fatal but it certainly affects our lives, sometimes for years. I hope he finds relief!

I just looked up Quetenza and am shocked at the $3000 price! You may want to try the under $9 Capzasin first….

Well if are Willing to try this procedure, the doctor will first try to have our insurance pay, but with this amount, it will be tricky, that’s for sure.
Quetenza is 8%, very high dosed, the procedure can only be done at the doctors office, it can occur side effects like, burning pain and the doctor has to react immediately.
I don’t know, what to do…
Our neurologist in Naples, ( we are snow birds) was thinking to “ burn” this Nerv down, our doctor over here (Fairbanks) says way to dangerous 🤷‍♀️

Possibly GABAPENTIN TABLETS could help relieve some of the discomfort from SHINGLES. It is sometimes recommended by doctors for nerve pain from shingles. Side effects are not bad for a medication. Dizziness, Drowsiness, Fatigue. Most of us could handle so little side effects. I wish you luck and most of all some relief and comfort from this terrible culprit lying dormant from CHICKENPOX that attacks our bodies. I was feeling a lot of stress when it flared up in me. I got shingles around 8 years ago when I had my car totaled by a drunk driver and being upset over a political candidate that won, both practically the same day. I got it on my forehead and around my right eye. My forehead still itches after all this time. I'm 82.
I take gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy in my feet. I've never had a reaction to gabapentin other than a little feeling of euphoria sometimes.
Although I am big on vaccines, I've been advised not to get the shingles vaccine due to my nerve problems.

I'm 82 also. I have severe itching & some pain around one eye, forehead & scalp. I take Gabapentin & use frozen gel compresses to sleep. I was hospitalized almost a week with shingles 13 years ago. One neurologist told me to not get the vaccine so I didn't. More recently several docs urged me to get the vaccine which I have done. My understanding is my post-herpetic neuralgia will never go away and it has not changed a bit in 13 years. I saw an anesthesiologist-pain specialist who after some testing prescribed a compound cream I use several times a day on my eyelid. It contains gabapentin & lidocaine plus several more drugs. It helps me get through the day without digging at my eye. There are also several rx pills that help with itching.

I've taken gabapentin for post-herpetic neuralgia for 13 years with no side effects. My shingles were around my eye/forehead/scalp. I also have a prescribed cream that contains gabapentin, lidocaine + other drugs. I use the cream around my eye to help with itching. The cream is a compound prescription from a pain specialist.

I consulted a neurosurgeon and was told to NEVER let anyone touch the trigeminal nerve. He said I would have worse problems. I've taken gabapentin for 13 years after having shingles on my face/scalp. I use a compound cream from an anesthesiologist-pain specialist around my eye and I sleep with a large frozen gel compound on one side of my face at night. This combination helps make post-herpetic neuralgia tolerable but, even with all this, I have frequent severe itching attacks at night. My neurologist also gave me an rx that I take when the itching becomes unmanageable.

P.S. I lived in Naples for 13 years. I'm sure you must love it there!
