Homocysteine & Osteoporosis.

A new rabbit hole for those who like going down them.

hopefullibrarian | @hopefullibrarian posted this in another thread in a follow -up to posts about elevated B12 levels. A quick search indicated there may be a scientific foundation for a link with osteoporosis.

"My lab gave the normal range for homocysteine (Hcy) as 0-15 umol/L. Whereas, Dr. McCormick, in his book Great Bones (p. 165) says, "Levels higher than 8umol/L can contribute to inflammation." He goes on to say, "When levels go above 15 umol/L, bone mineral density declines, creating a two-and-a-half-fold increase in fracture risk. Females with Hcy higher than 18 umol/L may have twice the risk of fracturing a hip...""

I’m often in rabbit holes. I get comfortable there finding it hard to dig my way out.
I had been searching taurine a few days ago looking for an alternative to decrease cardiovascular disease and taurine came up -and again in searching for homocysteine. Thank you for your prompt- once again reminds me that elevated homocysteine is awful.

There does seem to be strong evidence that taurine lowers homocysteine.

Next on my list, get a copy of Great Bones 🙂

It is amazing information! Thank you so much! For more than 10 years I have an elevated B12 level, and no doctor could explain it. In addition, when you google it, associations with different cancers come.

Si, it is osteoporosis.

It's a drug to lower high LDL cholesterol. Google it and you will find lots of info.

Most integrative / alternative doctors consider 15 to be way too high for homeocysteine. Here's a good article on supplements to lower it.
https://foodforthebrain.org/nutrition-for-healthcare-professionals/homocysteine-b-vitamins/
It covers the usual B-12, Folate, B-6 and four more nutrients that may help lower it.
Food for the Brain is a not for profit that seems to have pretty good info in this area.
