Anyone try bioidentical hormones to combat/treat osteoporosis?

I'm giving it some thought. After a bad experience with Alendronate, I'm very hesitant to start with Prolia.

So good to hear.

After a valiant but utterly failed attempt at building bones naturally, I ended up going on Forteo for two years which built back some of my loss. After Forteo I made the decision to go on HRT to maintain the gains. HRT will not build bone but it can help you keep what you have. I was on .025 transdermal from age 62 to 67 and it seems to have worked. My integrative doctor wanted me to increase the dose to .05 for possible increased benefit but I am not happy on that dose as it has caused some breast enlargement and tenderness so I am going back down to .0375.

I've been taking hrt again for about a year.
Micronised progesterone capsules
Oestrogel gel, one squeeze of pump.
I had to stop taking a while because I had bleeding and when I was checked out and resumed my progesterone w a s doubled to 200mg.
I also took tibolone for 5 years maybe 10, 15 years ago, I got worried about cancer and stopped without discussing it.
Now I'm retaking I find hot flushes gone, and I sleep much better, occasionally a bit itchy, otherwise all positive. Improving sleep obviously super beneficial.
As I'm not taking alendronate the endocrinologist put my bone improvement down to the hrt! Who am I to question this, I think everything helps or not, if only there was a magic buzzer when we do something right and a warning signal to stop us doing something regrettable.

I just began a protocol with bioidentical hormones after completing 2 years on Tymlos. I had an 11% gain with Tymlos injections and don’t want to be on another osteo med if possible. My cardiologist, who runs my bloods suggested hormone replacement to hold my gains. Plus, I am completely hormone deficient so this route seems sensible. I am on a 0.025 mg estradiol patch, 125 mg progesterone capsule and 0.5 mg testosterone cream. It’s only been a little over a week so we’ll see how it goes. Praying that I’ll sleep better, less hair loss, feel more energetic, not so cranky, less wrinkles but of utmost importance are my bones. I am severely osteoporotic but have never fractured, thank God. I’m very active, (hiking, pickleball, cardio, weights) so stronger bones is my first and foremost concern. Hormone replacement isn’t well received by many doctors because of flawed research in the early 2000’s. My cardiologist is very well educated in HRT and feels confident that this is the route for me. I am 72 and had a complete hysterectomy in my late 30’s, went on synthetic hormones for a short time, then stopped. Therein my severe bone loss. Praying the future will bring stronger bones and a happier me!

I am just beginning a protocol of bioidenticals…an estradiol patch, testosterone and progesterone. I just completed 2 years on Tymlos and I had great gains. My rheumatologist wants me on Reclast but my cardiologist suggested bioidenticals to assist with my lack of hormones and to potentially hold my bone improvements. I don’t want to be on an osteo med that is infused in my body for a year that I cannot stop if there are side effects. So I’m taking this route for now. I pray I will experience good results. I am 72.

Thank you for the information. I want to give the bioidenticals a chance before going on any further osteo meds. I had such bad side effects from alendronate that even persisted after going off of it.

How ironic. I am seeing my hormone doctor who put me on the Tymlos in 45 minutes and I put down on my list of questions if HRT would be a good idea! I was on it (bioidenticals from 47 - 58. Now I am 67. It would seem to make so much sense. Crazy irony that I just spied this question in the daily journal email!!! Like it was meant to be. (I did last week start eating soy tofu... figure it has phyto estrogens and it couldn't hurt!

I have been on bioidentical hormones for 20 years. I am 67 years old. I’ve written on this site before and maybe my story can give you more clarity. I am not on any medicine because I went on a to El for a month and got severely sick. I was using the bioidentical creams. My first doctor was Dr. Erika Schwartz out of New York. She is a top specialist on this topic. I just started on the pellet Testosterone estradiol, and a pill form of compounded bioidentical progesterone. So far I feel great I have to say I have much more energy and feel generally better. I am really curious to see my next scan in February and if the pellet therapy will have made a difference, I’m still considered osteoporosis. I am willing to take the chance with the bio identical before I do synthetic drugs again. If you do see a hormone specialist, make sure they have a lot of experience with bio identical hormones. They have been around for years many of the regular OB/GYN’s are now using them. When I first started with this whole bioidentical journey, I was considered way out there. Your hormone blood levels must be monitored. Hope this helps a bit.

thank you @nme1985! I saw the hormone Dr. yesterday and he did not want to deal with the bioidenticals - out of hand. Its not quite his specialty. He felt because I've been off them for 10 years I shouldn't go back on. Plus there is a cancer concern (mom died from extra ovarian cancer) but that is why I did the topical for 10 years (estradiol, testosterone, progesterone); I mentioned that someone else here mentioned their bone density went up 11 points from the bioidenticals alone. It makes TOTAL sense to me - you have hormones you build bones. No hormones everything deteriorates (aging process.)
I'm still getting a handle on the Tymlos. I have had both natural remedies and synthetics on different things - I try to learn as much as possible and be judicious.
Thanks for sharing your experience!!!
