on coloplast pouches
I received a text today from the nurse who did my home health care She was at a coloplast workshop and told me not to use skin prep for use on their product. I immediately called coloplast and spoke to a nurse who told me their wafers were designed to not use skin prep and to remove moisture from your skin which could not happen with skin prep She also said to wash stoma area with water only She further told me to warm my wafer prior to removing the covering with body heat even if u use a dryer which I do She said this activates the barrier to seal better. I tried it today and put the pouch on at 1030 am and did not change it till 630 pm with no problems to skin. I do use a disposable closed end pouch. They claim the barrier will last longer with less leakage by not using skin prep I was amazed at this info not what I was taught but ill try anything This is only if you use coloplast wafer This is for info only hope it works for you

I have been using Coloplast Assura, extra extended (the clear barrier) for 20 years. I use skin prep around the stoma with powder. I don't bother warming the wafer. I get 4 days wear time and my skin is fine. I have an ileostomy.
It's great to try new things, but if a different way doesn't work as well, do whatever works best for you!

6 ReactionsI just talked with Coloplast. (July 11, 2024 at 5:25 CSDST) According to Coloplast he is apparently calling "Skin Barrier Spray" Skin Prep. The Coloplast rep told me that you could use the barrier spray or not use the spray. Whichever works better for you. I don't know what "Skin Tac" is either. Are you talking about "Brava Skin Barrier Spray" #120205? It is very important to use the right terminology since some of us might get the wrong message etc. The "Wafer" is apparently the "Skin Barrier Moldable Ring #120427" or another ring.
Skin Tac is an adhesive, it comes in a spray or wipes. I use the wipes, the spray is too broad, at least it was a few yrs ago.
I use Hollister but terms are similar. A wafer would be the baseplate that goes directly on the skin and is what you snap a bag on in a 2 piece system. The wafer does serve as a barrier, but the moldable barrier ring is a separate piece typically used in conjunction
with the wafer to make sure there is a snug fit around the stoma.
