Prolia doctor prescribing 2 injections of Prolia in just 3 weeks

Posted by guinivere @guinivere, Jun 14 10:47pm

This doctor is with UW Madison. I have not seen her but she has all my records & test results, the whole deal. My communications wuth her have been through her staff. She has all my lab work & we had agreed earlier on Prolia but I was very taken aback when she scheduled my first injection for June 19 & what looks to be the second for July 7! I thought they were every 6 months!!11 I know my Dexa score was not good but the only fracture I have had has been in my wrist a year ago which still causes me pain. But I can't get over the feeling that I should not be taking those injections so close together!

I think your idea of a visit followed by an injection at a late date seems very reasonable.

My request for a visit was rejected. I have gained some time as I am going to be out of town for about a week. I may have no choice but to go with this doctor. I have actually thought of asking my small town personal doctor who has known me for 20 years if he would step in.

That might be a good idea, but be prepared for him to decline to get personally involved on something outside his specialty. Some will, some won't. Also remember that the final decision is always yours. They can't make you do anything. Three shots in a few weeks is so outside the norm that I personally would demand to know the reasoning behind this, asking any nurse, technician or PA you can get to talk to you. And I would refuse to show up for additional shots without that information. But that's just me. This is not medical advice. Before any of this, however, I would be looking for a second opinion or a different doctor. And as another poster pointed out, your insurance may not cover additional shots so close together. That's another important avenue to explore. Immediately contact your insurance company. They usually have to approve Prolia injections BEFORE they are administered or they may not cover them. Find out if they've been approved or will be approved. Good luck. I hope you get your answers.

Another avenue that could be pursued is contacting Amgen. I bet they would quickly put an end to any idea of multiple injections in a short period of time. They might even be willing to contact your doctor,

I am started writing this now twice & the pc gremlin deletes it!. Trying
again! Re the referral, I don;t know if this point if my family doctor has
completed that & I am running out of time. This whole thing has taken
forever & my bones are certainly not improving over time.

I am really kicking myself for contacting UW Madison in the first place for
an osteoporosis doctor when the Sauk Prairie Hospital out here is much
closer & I should have realized that there just might have been an
osteoporosis doctor who comes out at least once a month that I could have
connected with! Much closer too. A 20 minute drive as opposed to an hour
or more! Dumb me! I have already called the hospital in SP & confirmed
this & even know who the doctor is - !!! Infinitely better than my current
one in Madison who I suspect is a newbie.

This may not be possible but I am going to give it a try!
