on coloplast pouches

Posted by pez01 @pez01, Jun 20 6:17pm

I received a text today from the nurse who did my home health care She was at a coloplast workshop and told me not to use skin prep for use on their product. I immediately called coloplast and spoke to a nurse who told me their wafers were designed to not use skin prep and to remove moisture from your skin which could not happen with skin prep She also said to wash stoma area with water only She further told me to warm my wafer prior to removing the covering with body heat even if u use a dryer which I do She said this activates the barrier to seal better. I tried it today and put the pouch on at 1030 am and did not change it till 630 pm with no problems to skin. I do use a disposable closed end pouch. They claim the barrier will last longer with less leakage by not using skin prep I was amazed at this info not what I was taught but ill try anything This is only if you use coloplast wafer This is for info only hope it works for you

What do you mean by 'skin' prep? I use Coloplast all the time and I do use a Skin Tac before I put the flange on. By wafer do you mean flange? I use a heating pad over the flange and pouch after they are both on. I don't understand.

I use a Coloplast Mio Deep Convex one piece drainable pouch. I have tried both ways: with powder and barrier spray and with nothing. My skin does better with rather than without. I change my pouch twice a week. I rarely get any significant leaks.
I have found that warming the pouch to body temperature helps with adhesion.
After fifteen years with an Ileostomy I have found that trying different methods and devices works best. New things and information are always turning up.

This was new information I received from coloplast and I am trying it. I am not in anyway a pro at this. If you want professional info I would call and talk to one of the nurses at coloplast

Like you i have tried various systems I presently use the coloplast mio flex convex closed pouch so i change entire system 2 or 3 times a day , I am 85 with very bad arthritis in my hands including crooked fingers and after much and tribulations this works best for my situation

I tried the Mio Flex. It didn't work as well for me as the Mio deep convex.
Have you tried a drainable pouch? The Mio is very easy to drain and you could probably change less often if changing is a problem with your arthritis.
BTW I'm 84.

I do use the convex since the mio flex flat didnt work for me either I have tried the drainable pouch but I never felt really clean, It takes me 5 mins to change my pouch so disposable works far better and I always feel clean. But everyone has to find what works for them. After trying many samples and different systems I settled on the mio flex convex closed end disposable

I used the skin barrier prep because my skin was so sensitive to all adhesive. I thought it would help.

I always used skin prep and was told it was to protect my skin This new concept from coloplast amazed me I am trying it without skin prep to see if it works

I don't think I"m ready to try anything new. It took me so long to get the thing working that I am afraid to step outside my comfort zone.
