Eye Burning Related to Food Sensitivities

Posted by DebE13 @debe13, Nov 27, 2011

I have collagenous colits and a list of other problems that my GI doctor seems reluctant to address. I have horrible burning in my eyes with a puffy feeling around my eye area (no actual inflamation) and stomach aches/pains, fatigue, headache, and facial flushing/redness to name a few. He told me to see an eye doctor and referred me to a rheumatologist. My eyes are good and was told I have dry eye and to use drops. I got literature on fibermyalgia but I''m not interested in more drugs. The rheumatologist also told me to take sleeping pills, exercise, and use eye drops and that I shoudl see a GI doc for the stomach problems. I am incredibily frustrated because I feel sick every time I eat and the eye pain/burning never goes away. I've been tested for celiac disease several times and it always comes back negative. I am not lactose intolerant. I tried an elimination diet religiously for 4 months and removed all processed foods, wheat, dairy, and yeast. I didn't notice a signficant change in how I felt. At that time, I didn't have the eye issues. I've read that the eye problems can be related to food or could also related to liver problems. My blood test show my liver is good. Any ideas would be appreciated because I seem to be on my own. I keep complaining of ill health but all my tests keep coming back good. I am afraid to eat and I want my life back.

Did you every find help and relief? After hazardous chemical exposure (1-bromopropane), my eyes burn and water after I eat...especially sugar....but the reaction is not just to sugar. I now take benedryl to combat the negative immune system response (burning watering eyes after eating). Benedryl was something I decided to test when my friend told me MD Anderson was using Benedryl as part of their regiment to treat cancer patients. Benedryl seems to stop or mask the negative immune system response and the burning and watering eyes stops in minutes.

Hi Tulla.

Did you ever find a cure for this? I tend to have a reaction when I eat anything (especially sugar). I usually get a burning/dry sensation in my eyes and in my sinus, and can't figure it out. I've been to the doctors, and all my test results come out fine (B12, thyroid, liver, kidney, diabetes). It's been about 7 months now and I have nowhere to turn. Any help would be much appreciated.

I also can barely open my eyes in the morning. So much worse after sleeping. FAQ sheet from ophthalmologist said some people sleep with eyes slightly open, no one would even notice, but it dries out your eyes. Suggestion is to use eye ointment before bed. I haven’t tried it because it makes your vision a little blurry during the night.

Also my eyes used to burn and get red with any eye drops. I was told I’m allergic to preservatives so get drops without. More expensive cause they are single use packages but no more issues with the drops for dry eyes. Best of luck.

I still have the reaction. I don’t think I have been exposed to hazardous chemicals.
But, when you said “negative immune system response” that got me thinking....I have 3 autoimmune diseases, so maybe it is related to something there.
Thanks for telling me! I will try the Benedryl and also look into the immune reaction!

my eye dr has prescribed auto-immune eye drops that i use twice daily—first Restasis and then later the almost double strength of cyclosporine, Cequa

It really helps

I have many things that affect my eyes. I have dry eyes, but I also get gunky gritty burning eyes from almonds, almond milk, rice, rice milk, any kind of bread, potatoes, and anything dairy. Cannot seem to find any research answers to why. It usually happens overnight, after I've had any of those things. Very frustrating. Also, any type of screen time makes them burn and feel gravelly, within just a few minutes. I wish I had answers for you, but mostly questions, as well. ....But you are not alone in this quest

I was wondering if you ever found an answer? I came upon your post while searching the internet and it sounds just like me! My eyes burn horribly after eating and my face flushes, some times a slight headache. I don’t have other symptoms and it happens with everything I eat.

Try eliminating high-oxalate and salicylate foods and see if might be reacting to either or both of those. There are groups on Facebook for both where you can learn more.

Could be Oxalate or Salicylate sensitivity with those foods you listed as triggers.

When I was having these exact symptoms it was related to the water I was drinking from my kitchen sink. I had just purchased a new home (the house itself was built about 10 years ago) and I was drinking water from a tap that had an in-sink filtration system. I developed horrible stomach issues (burning, cramping, acid reflux) and then the same burning/puffiness under my eyes. It took a few months, but I eventually tracked the root cause to the water and then switched to drinking only bottled water for a few weeks and all of my symptoms completely disappeared. Obviously I had the filtration system removed and changed the faucet, but I am still a bit afraid to drink out of my tap because the pain I was having was horrible. I don't know if there was bacteria in the faucet itself? Or if the filter was toxic or had something like bleach in it (?) I really don't know -- but that was the root cause of my issue and I am now totally better. I am so sorry you are having this issue because my doctor was completely clueless and it was so frustrating ... I also had all the same tests you've had and everything came back normal, even though I was in blinding pain. So I would say -- at minimum, something is definitely irritating your stomach and I would question absolutely everything you are consuming in your home environment and also maybe, notice if you start to feel better when you are vacation? Good luck and I hope this information leads you to the root cause of your issue!
