Does anyone know how to find clinical trials for adenocarcinoma?

Posted by khammons24 @khammons24, Jun 18 9:46pm

My grandma was just diagnosed with adenocarcinoma and they told her that she has two options hospice or chemo for 2 months 5 days a week and she's 73 so she knows she can't do the chemo. We are supposed to meet with hospice tomorrow and I'm trying to find another option for her. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it

Best of luck to you. Your oncologist should also know of trials.

Hi @khammons24, welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm sorry that your family is facing this situation. Lung cancer is a heart-breaking disease. Some patients are strongly resistant to chemo. If she expresses her concerns to her oncologist they may be able to reduce some of her fears. I'm not saying this would be is easy at all, and it really depends on her overall health, but some chemotherapies aren't as harsh as they used to be, and the medications to address side effects are better than they used to be too.
This NIH site includes any US clinical trials. You can search on the condition to try to narrow down the lists. https://clinicaltrials.gov/
Sometimes seeing an oncologist at a large teaching institution is a good step in finding a trial that is a good fit. And they can serve as a second opinion, if she hasn't received one yet. A second opinion can be reassuring that she is on the appropriate treatment plan or it can provide additional treatment options. https://www.cancer.gov/research/infrastructure/cancer-centers/find
She has to feel good enough to push forward. Is she open to a second opinion or a clinical trial?

Just a note, but just because she is 73 doesn't mean she cant have chemo. If the doctor gave her the choices, they may think she can handle it. Also, you can check into “Cyberknife” and ask if she is a candidate for that. It is pin point radiation on the nodule or tumor. My Aunt had it done at 77, and she is Cancer free still at 5 years now. She is now 83. What stage is your Grandma at? What is her health status? Maybe get a second opinion? Praying that it goes well. 🙏❤️

Get a second opinion at one of the leading cancer centers attached to a medical research hospital. She needs a doctor who will fight for her, not write her off.

Mayo Clinic is one of them.

I got hooked up with Leal Health. They keep track of me and my scans etc. Im stage IV and am currently not needing their help due to clear scans for 1.5 yrs. They always check in with me, send informative emails about new trials and have a list of current trials that are available to us and matched to my specific type of cancer. I go on their website too and check things out as well. Maybe they can be of some assistance.

@khammons24, in addition to the helpful suggestions you've already received, you can also contact Mayo Clinic.

If you would like to find out more about clinical trials available through Mayo Clinic, you can search the database or call to talk with a study coordinator. See more here:

How did the meeting with the hospice team go? How is your grandma doing? How are you doing?

What did your grandmother decide? If she is still thinking about a clinical trial, the link Colleen have you to Mayo or is a good one. Another one that will help you find the best treatment is at Go2 Foundation , they have a couple staff members whose job is to help find trials. https://go2.org/resources-and-support/general-support/lungmatch/
