Myofascial Pain Syndrome Suspected

Posted by kellybelter @kellybelter, Jun 14 11:58am

My husband has seen every possible doctor and they can't find out anything wrong with him. He is in severe pain all the time. They believe that he has myofacial pain syndrome, but it is hard to diagnose. We are going to see a pain management doctor next week. Are there any medications that seem to work for anyone? OTC medications do nothing for the pain at all.

@kellybelter - what is his physical history? With work and activity.
Did depression set in before pain or after?
Was there one day when it all started? As one event of pain, can lead to limiting movement, which then causes the wider spread pain and less movment which then turns into depression which worsens all over symptoms.

I'd like to invite @bustrbrwn22, @ajh5285, @dream1649, and @scungileen to this discussion as they have all posted about dealing with Myofascial Pain Syndrome and may have some insights to share for you and your husband.

@kellybelter, no over the counter medications seem to be helping your husband, how is he coping with the pain? Has anything offered a distraction or helped ease the mental burden that goes along with chronic pain?

I'm on 300 mg Gabapentin 3 times a day.
Now this Friday I was having muscle spam in my shoulders and it felt like my shoulders were jerking my head back. I went to Urgent Care the doctor there put me on Zanaflex, take 1 every 8 hours they are 4 mg. The doctor showed me in the lower part of my head in the back side was what was happening. I was scared and I had my neck brace on and he said we don't use those any more.

He has seen a neurologist and rheumatologist , had MRIs, CT scans, and Xrays of head, spine, neck, eyes, and hips. They found nothing.

I saw a lot of specialist too at prestigious medical facilities, but no one checked my B12, even though I had obvious symptoms , until I asked them to. They said I was healthy. Sadly, i now have serious damage.

My doctor said my B12 was high in my blood work. I don't have an appointment with my Neurologist until October.

@dream1649 -

And what did he show you in the back of your head what was happening?

And yes I have heard neck braces are not good because they weaken the muscles more.
Which is not what you want worth this.

Feel the back of your head you will feel a Hollow place and the muscles are on each side. You should be them.

@dream1649

The occipital muscles or SCM?
These get tight on many people overtime and will then spasm and pull on the skull.

How is your core strength/shoulders and posture?

He owns a tube bending business. There was a lot of manual labor, so I am sure that plays a role. He is very depressed and stressed and I know that makes things worse.

I was diagnosed with Myofascial PS years ago, after a few months I saw a rheumatologist who diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia. There are treatments for fibromyalgia that seems to work well for a lot of people. Usually medication.

I wish you both well!
