I have had Key hole laparoscopic bowel surgery 3 weeks ago
I had Key hole laparoscopic bowel surgery on my big bowel 3 weeks ago due to severe diverticulitis.
After being released from hospital everything looked good, started to poop and thought this is great. Then 2 days later I got severe diarrhoea and 2 days later I felt ill so I went to my doctor who gave me antibiotics as she thought I may have eaten something that caused upset stomach.
After another day my diarrhoea went away and I felt like I was returning to normal.
Then I started getting a bit bloated as my bowels had now stopped and after 3 days I really started to feel oh no what’s going on now. Then I felt like a poop but when I go, it’s very small amount.
Today I wake up tired, no energy and have pain in my left side (where my the surgeon removed 35cm of bowel 3 weeks ago) then later in the morning I felt pains in my stomach all over. I managed to poop a little . . . then all day long I’ve had to poop a very small amount probably 7 times now . .
Are you suppose to feel like this after 3 weeks recovery from Bowel surgery ?
I’m scared I have an issue so I’d like to hear from other people who have had this surgery to how they went. Should I be worried as to what’s happening or is it normal ? I feel bloated still and feel things going on in my stomach. Any advice would be very welcome.
Thank you

I’m not sure what is ordinary practice, but when I had C-Diff my rheumatologist put my infusions on pause because they are immunosuppressive- so I had to document the infection was cleared before I could resume the infusions.
@andoman They are called Benefiber Fiber Gummies. They also say “prebiotic” and some say “prebiotic and probiotic” . Both act the same. They are lifesavers for me. They are on Amazon and kind of pricey considering you have to take them twice a day (I take 2 twice a day although the bottle says 3 twice a day). Benefiber powder is cheaper and is tasteless even when mixed with just water, but you have to take it 3 times a day. I will add a picture of the bottles but not sure if they will let it through. Good luck!!
I take them now for constipation from statins but previously I took them as adjunct drug for diarrhea. I chew 3 at night now. When I was staving off diarrhea before I was diagnosed and treated. It was adjunct to Imodium.
I’ll see if I can get some of these. Still very irregular bowel, one minute I’m always in the loo so I take one Metamucil satchel and then I don’t go for 2-3 days. . I just want to get regular like once a day . .
I will just say you may have a new reality. I was regular as an alarm clock before contracting Yersinia in May of 2022, and the antibiotic given for that left me with diarrhea - because it killed good bacteria and opened the door to C-Diff. Another antibiotic for that and no relief of diarrhea. A colonoscopy with random biopsies confirmed a diagnosis of collagenous microscopic colitis. A couple of months of Budesonide and I was able to put it behind me- 7 months later.
But I still am not on a regular schedule because I added a statin, which causes constipation. So now I chew fiber gummies at night. Some days I go, some not. If I go two days I eat a bunch of salad. It’s such a distraction to be managing it all the time.
So that’s my new reality. I know from my own experience it could be worse.
Wow, sounds like it will be my new reality too. It’s so stressful too which cannot be good.
What’s this Budesonide ?
Budesonide is a steroid that is effective in the colon without causing systemic response. It is particularly effective in treating microscopic colitis (so called because the only way to diagnose it is from random biopsies of the colon examined under a microscope). Like typical steroids, you start at maximum dosage and then step down until you discontinue it a couple of months later.
I have been taking these and they are good. I also take SB 5B the surgeon recommended and it definitely has helped. I’ve found that greasy food my guy can’t take it like before. At least I’m alive and can actually enjoy life once again. I’ve always got to make sure I know where a loo is . . just in case of emergency 🤣
Don’t know if you’re still following this thread, but I read about your C-Diff from an antibiotic overdose. I contracted C-Diff for the same reason-overprescribed Cipro for a simple UTI. My stomach has never been the same, no matter what I try. My bowel movements are terrible now because of that. I also take a statin, which I’m thinking is the second culprit. Are these gummies still working for you? I have quite a collection of products and I don’t want to add another if it’s not still recommended. Thanks in advance! Or for anyone else out there that might see this and be able to answer… I’ll take any help I can get!
I also take statin. I was awesome after diagnosis and Budesonide treatment of microscopic colitis, collagenous type. But in May I relapsed and i was put on budesonide again but couldn't sustain similar results. I saw my GI doc last week and we are starting over with budesonide at same dosage and duration given in a new diagnosis. So we will see.
