Does skin recover after prednisone?

My mother was on 5 mg of prednisone for over 10 years. Her skin got so bad that even the smallest cut would become infected and then go into sepsis. She had 5 hospitalizations last year and the last one finally killed her. All those years of prednisone left her with no immune system and no way to fight infection off. I was diagnosed with PMR last August and have been trying very hard to get off of the prednisone. Started at 20 and am down to 6. It’s been hard. I’ve had a couple flares but am trying to taper slowly. 1/2 mg every 3 weeks. I also have osteoporosis so I need to get off of it soon.

I feel for you, I really do, especially after what happened with your mom. I can relate to the long time prednisone use and it’s effects. I do have the thin skin and osteoporosis. I’m very careful if I scratch or cut myself to clean right away and then spray some more Bactine on it and apply an antibiotic ointment and a small bandaid. Haven’t had any infections yet on my skin.
I also have osteoporosis and I’m getting yearly infusions of Reclast for my bones and taking calcium/magnesium supplements.
I realize this is all a big pain, but you gotta do what you can to take of yourself regardless of your circumstances. I do it because I’m 74 years old and I have a very active 9 year old grandson!! Good luck to you!
