Any recommendations for radiation oncologist at Mayo in Rochester?
My husband, age 79, has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
Biopsy on April 30th of 12 cores with 6 positive. 3+3 and 3+4 for a score of 7 on the Gleason scale. PSA of 6.3. He has had the Decipher test done with a score of .28. He has an MRI scheduled for July 3rd.
After listing to YouTube videos with Mark ScholzMD and Alex Scholz he is leaning towards radiation rather than surgery. If he goes that direction, he will ask for the Prostox test to see what the impact will be on him. He visited Mayo on May 23rd to establish the relationship, with surgery in mind at that time.
I have noticed references to surgeons at Mayo that were recommended by this group, but nothing on a radiologist for oncology. Does anyone have experiences with Mayo in Rochester for radiation? Did you have the Prostox test first? Would really appreciate your insight and guidance. Thanks!

My nurse practitioner at Mayo Clinic (in Minnesota) referred me to a radiation oncologist (Dr. Haddock) whose speciality is gynecological cancers. Dr. Haddock and his team including a radiation oncology fellow were all thorough and wonderful for me to work with. I'm going to assume that your husband's referral to radiation oncology at Mayo Clinic will be to a radiation oncologist whose speciality is prostate cancer.

1 ReactionThank you. Do you mind sharing what type of treatment you had with Dr. Choo and your results? We are new to the options of radiation treatment.
I had surgery to remove prostate. 16 months later came back in lower tummy. 35 old style radiation treatments. Caused lots of problems. Needed 40 HBOT to control bleeding. Lupton for 2 years. 7 years after original surgery still cancer free. Not a fun journey but still alive and kicking and cancer free. Dr Choo team helped get thru this. Be sure to find a great urologist to help with recovery. Many other options available now. Contact doctor and he can help you decide which option is best.

You can look at the list of Mayo Radiation Oncologists by location. Then check to see what their focus is to find one who is more specialized in that area. One should do that for all needs because Specialists have subspecialties.

1 ReactionAbout a year ago, spring 2023, when my husband needed radiation for a recurrence, Dr. Kwon recommended the following radiation oncologists at Mayo Rochester. There are others listed on the Mayo web site, but these men were specifically mentioned at the time:
Kenneth Olivier (has treated my husband many times over the years; now treats other cancers besides prostate)
Ryan Phillips
Sean Park

2 ReactionsAt 74 my doctors chose radiation= same results they said. They put in SPACE OARS in front of rectum to protect it from radiation treatments. Today 18 months later my bowel movements are normal with stool softeners. My PSA is < .01. I ve had LUPRON TREATMENTS plus Arbiterone/ prednisone for 18 months now. Need naps in afternoon but I m ok. My Gleason was 9-10 with two lymph nodes affected too/ thanks to AGENT ORANGE I was exposed too. Happy D-DAY to you guys. Go Veterans!!
