10 months post TKR and Stairs

Posted by aggiesmama24 @aggiesmama24, Apr 13 12:16pm

Hello,
I have had both knees replaced left one at 43 and my right one 10 months ago at 48. I waited four months to go back to work, which is on my feet walking and using stairs, but not as much back then as I do now since I am at a new grocery store, which is much older and only has a freight elevator, which is not for people.
My point being I started noticing more pain the last week or two in my new knee,
and asking for any input or advice if I am hurting my knee or straining it by having to do all these stairs since I have no choice because everything and I mean everything! is downstairs, including offices, bathrooms, and all our coolers, freezers, and overstock is kept. otherwise, does anyone have suggestions on certain walking shoes/nonslip work shoes?
I currently wear Skechers, and just got a pair of new balance through work, but I’m almost wondering if those are the cause.
My surgery was actually through Twin City orthopedics Edina, but wanted to reach out here first before I reach out to my surgeon.
Any help would be grateful.
Thanks,
Becca

If it were me I would schedule a consult with my doc.

I am now 5 months (right knee) and 3 months (left knee) post surgery. I have no issues with stairs and do them daily. Sometimes in socks, sometimes in shoes. I agree with gravity3 - I would consult with your surgeon.

Sounds like you are putting a lot of pressure on the knees. Stairs are the worst! My Dr told me the more I abuse the new new knee the faster it will wear out. As far as shoes, I invested in a pair of "HOKA" walking shoes, which is what a lot of hospital workers wear. Cost me around $160. , but worth it.
Good luck to you.

Welcome @aggiesmama24.

I had my right knee replaced in 2006, and had a really bad recovery that included a few manipulations to break up scar tissue. I didn't find my new normal until I was well over a year - but I was only 20 when I had my knee replaced so scar tissue growth was thought be a result of being younger.

Like @cathyanne & @gravity3 mentioned - I was in lockstep with my surgeon and his team to try and figure out my issues. How are you doing in your overall rehab in regards to flexion and extension? Do you have swelling with your pain?

Hi Justin,
Hope you’re doing better now. I’m have actually been doing great in my rehab.
Still continue to do my exercises, etc. just went and bought a new pair of shoes at Schuler shoes on Sunday. So far they seem to be making it feel better. Still going to email my surgeon, but I think a lot of it does have to do with the concrete, standing all day and all the stairs.
Here’s just an example of the stairs I have to do at work. So when I made this post, it wasn’t about my rehab or me not doing what I’m supposed to be doing. It was more about if anybody else had any issues with stairs or standing on concrete due to their job. I’m just not sure if I’m overdoing it.
Thanks! 🙂

Thank you, went to Schuler Shoes on Sunday actually got fitted with “Brooks” we’ll see how these work otherwise I’ll go back and ask them about the HOKA
Yes, I was doing great up until I had to transfer stores a little over a month ago. That is why I reached out.
Don’t want to go running back to my surgeon quite yet may contact my physical therapist. First see what he has to say.
But yes, I know stairs aren’t the greatest but right now I have no choice.
Thank you for your input

I found that my Brooks shoes are only ones I can wear. The Sketchers seemed to make my toes go forward and put more pressure on my new knee. Checking with your PT is a great idea. My PT suggested to take the stairs one at a time. It takes a bit longer to tackle a flight but has helped with the swelling and pain. Be kind to yourself and try to rest when you are not at work.

I live in a 2 story house and do my stairs multiple times a day.
Im 78 and have lived in my house for 45 years so I’m used to them.
