I agree with you, Tony. Lumbar fusion results are very individualized. It can be really helpful or it can change completely your lifestyle. My first fusion was on L4-L5 in 2021. It did not help my pain. Pain and inability to be active was my major complaint.
I had my second fusion in July 2023. Different surgeon, he revised and removed the screws from the prior surgery, then extended it down to L5 – S1. It was minimally, invasive, supposed to be quicker recovery time. I did nothing but walk for three months wearing a brace. I feel it has help me a great deal, while my pain is not gone, my ability to move around is much better.
Unfortunately, now my neck is giving me a lot of trouble due to my increasing my activity. At 71 years old, I’m not ready to just sit. I want to be active, I want to go, bike riding, hiking, kayaking!
That may be unrealistic, but I’m going down fighting as Tony says!
