Hi Lori, Thank you for checking in. Mark has indeed relapsed as of a bone marrow biopsy in December 2023. His Myelodysplastic syndrome blood cancer is back along with all 3 gene mutations. We are at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix now for pre-admit testing to ensure Mark is cleared for a second transplant. An unrelated international donor was identified so that is fabulous. If all goes well, he will be admitted on Friday, May 24, 2024, to have his central line inserted and the high-dose chemo to begin, then anticipated transplant date is Thursday, May 30, 2024. I will update this blog as we know more.
Hope you are doing well! Jamie and Mark

Hi Jamie! I’m glad I checked in with you! Not the response I excepted to see but so happy Mark’s able to go ahead with his 2nd transplant.
Interesting that the chimerisms on his first 3 biopsies were perfect and then the degrade. As you know, the theory behind transplants is that the mutated cells can trick our old immune systems, causing them to no longer recognize the cancer cells so they continue to proliferate out of control. When a donor’s immune system is installed, if some of the mutated cells remain and reemerge after chemo, the new system should recognize them as cancerous and are snuffed out. I wonder if his first donor’s marrow wasn’t able to recognize the mutations either? Was Mark’s first donor a relative?

In any event, having this new unrelated donor should give him a great shot with success! Not fun going through all the pretreatment chemo again, but now he knows the ropes and he’ll be on the road to recovery once again!

There are several new members in the forum who will be having bone marrow transplants coming up in the same time frame as Mark. I have a great discussion going and would love for you and Mark to join us there when he’s feeling up to it.
