We have been told to eat only white rice, bread, no pulses, no vegetables with fibre. No cereals with fibre. I just cannot comprehend the logic

It means you have to follow a low residue diet which helps having soft stool (no constipation, no diarrhea) that pass easily and avoiding gases. It makes treatment more tolerable.
