Besides Tampa, FL, what other top places/centers for parathyroid surge

Posted by musicbart @musicbart, Feb 23, 2024

I know many here have gone to the Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa, FL. But what are some other top centers/places for parathyroid surgery, places/centers having good outcomes and where the surgeon(s) do many of these parathyroid surgeries? If you know one or some, please state the actual name of the place/center/institution rather than just the city (but both are of course fine too). Thanks

Hopefully they will check all 4 glands during surgery.

YES!!! All the glands must be checked. One reason for this, is that you don't have to have tumors...in my case I probably will have tumor (s), but my glands have been used and toooo over active for too long, so they are probably permanently damaged and will stay pumping out calcium, so some of my whole glands will be removed.

I had 3 and a half of my four parathyroid glands removed in 2019. The surgery was performed at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was the first major surgery I'd ever had. It was a very positive experience, and I had no problems post-surgery either.

Did you end up getting parathyroid surgery? I was referred for a consult at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. It would have been a 2 hour plus operation which seemed excessive. I did end up getting a consult at Tampa General Hospital (parathyroid institute) - not the same as the Norman Institute. I was happy with the phone consult (they got all my records) and it will be a min. invasive approx 25 min. operation. Much better! And the surgeons at Tampa General Hospital have done thousands. Worth it to fly there.

Haven't had parathyroidectomy yet. Two VA MDs - one an endocrinologist and the other an endocrine surgeon - thought that Norman in FL was a bad place to go for surgery. I didn't ask each of them why they (who weren't together with me- different day with each one) felt or know that Norman's not so special, not so wonderful as it claims to be.

Maybe I'll have parathyroidectomy with surgeon Eren Berber of Cleveland or maybe with the VA-- I don't know yet. You see, I could travel alone to a surgery center but have no one, no helpers in my life, to then accompany me home after surgery-- the surgery location could be very far from where I live. [Most respectable medical/surgical businesses will not let a patient go home alone after various surgeries. I suppose this is due to state law in the states where they're located.] And I don't know what troubles/difficulties I'd have living alone, with no helpers, after parathyroidectomy. This is a complication I suppose for me.

They think Norman is bad then I would never go back to them. My wife went to Norman and it was the best experience ever. Your doctors are full of beans! Make sure the place you choose will check all 4 glands. Ask your surgeon how many of these surgeries have the done. This is a simple surgery when done by experts. Very little down time.

There is a parathyroid clinic in Phoenix where a doctor previously from the Norman Clinic practices. It’s Southwest Parathyroid Center, Dr Deva Boone, 480-542-6509.
