Tymlos or Forteo

Posted by jbfm @jbfm, May 10 8:38am

Has anyone taken Forteo for two years, taken several years with no meds and then taken Tymlos successfully? I'm loathe to begin Reclast because I'm worried about long-term effects! But I need to do something!

@gravity3

I am very interested to see what Dr. Leder has to say about this during his presentation to the OsteoBoston group on May 21 7pm. I am still struggling with my endocrinologists recommendation to follow evenity with prolia.

I am putting it on my calendar. His presentation is positive about the efficacy of Prolia (including a staggered combo with Forteo) but like others, warns about the dangers when coming off. He uses it less than he used to as I remember.

@gravity3 so your endo does not recommend Reclast? Is the recommendation for Prolia based on the Amgen suggestion?

I am hopng for more up to date info since his YouTube video. Evenity has been on the market longer....

Gently, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I will be using bone markers. I've read both McCormick books and met with him where we discussed them. I'm not aware that he does not recommend risidronate. In my case, I've used alendronate in the past without issue. He suggested alendronate after Forteo. Fortunately my endo agreed to baseline CTX, P1NP, and Dexa prior to starting Forteo. She also agreed to three and eighteen month CTX/P1NP tests.

I'm currently 66 and concerned that I will run out of runway on osteoporosis meds (because I plan to live to 100... smile. I'm very active). My endo gave me the choice of Forteo, Tymlos or Evenity. I selected Forteo for various reasons but also for it's 4 yr lifetime use. I'm really curious to understand sequencing of these drugs. Any sources you or others could provide would be great.

He objected to reclast because prior to evenity I had been on alendronate for 5 years....hmm. still trying to work out how well versed he is on sequencing. I was on forteo for two years prior to alendronate and am interested to know whether doing another 2 yr forteo would be a good next step. I am 76

I definitely need to hear his positives on prolia

If you did 5 years alendronate, his suggestion might make more sense, though Prolia is also anti-resorptive. I would be curious how many Reclasts you would need to "lock in" before a drug holiday might be possible.

@gravity3 your situation is complex and kind of illustrates the challenges we all have when thinking about the long term.

I want to know, if I do low dose Reclast, how effective a second round of Tymlos might be. Evenity and Forteo are not tolerable for me and even my doctor says no Prolia.

Hope we both get enough clarity and info to make sense for our individual bone sagas!

@gravity3 so you did Forteo for 2 years, Alendronate for 5 years and Evenity for a year? Did you have good improvements with this sequencing?

@elisabeth007

i had very good “long term effects with Reclast”—-first time it reversed my osteoporosis ….2nd time—-it improved my osteoporosis considerably

Wow
Didn’t know Reclast improved density
Thought it was used after anabolic bone builders like Tymlos to maintain the improvement

and i was unaware that it was prescribed in the manner you are familiar with….ive essentially followed medical advice and have done little independent research

May ask what are the long term effects of Reclast that you have heard about?
