I agree that you need to talk to your PCP or psychiatrist or whomever is prescribing it. The slower taper the better. It will feel rough, but try to just stay present and try to not go into the future with your mind thinking about the next time you are going to take one. If you can go down by .5 a couple of weeks at a time, it will be better. Do not stop cold turkey. Hang in there and keep reaching out. I have been where you are.
Speak to your doctor about switching over to Valium. It has a much longer half life than Xanax and is much easier to taper off. Google the Ashton Manual. It’s a step by step guide to tapering.
