Tymlos side effects I've encountered

Posted by anniesan @anniesan, Oct 2, 2022

Hi. I started Tymlos in February 2022 and about a month after starting it I began experiencing excruciating muscle spasms, esp in upper thighs and feet, neuropathy, as well as debilitating hip, leg, and back pain. My doctor wanted me to try and stay on it for at least a year, but I absolutely could not go on living with the pain I experienced. I stopped taking the Tymlos completely 6 days ago and all my symptoms have subsided. Has anyone else experienced these side effects while on Tymlos?

Thanks @lnl. I'm wondering if I can continue too. I will give it a week to see if the side effects improve. I can't take the biphosphonate pill, so would have to take the Reclast injection. @windyshores has suggested a low dose of that every 3 months.

Good luck. I hate the pills but can tolerate them. The only side effect I get is constipation, which is not good, but it's manageable. If I weren't petrified about Reclast, I'd do that. I will talk to my endo about a series of low-dose infusions when I next see her. I'm around if you want to DM me about stopping Tymlos. It can sometimes feel like you're the only one who can't do it. In fact, there are a few of us on this site who just had to stop for a variety of reasons.

My endo only wants to give me Prolia after Tymlos. He doesn't seem to like Reclast. I am looking for a new Dr, but not easy to find. Thanks so much for your response. It did feel like I was the only one.

Hello dianestanley, I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my 60s. This was so unexpected because I thought I was being careful and taking care of myself. My dr said that sometimes it's just genetics.

The reason I noticed your post is because I have a lot of issues with my teeth and jaw too.

I have not started on any osteoporosis medication since getting the diagnosis a week ago because I am scheduled to get a dental implant this month. I read that I will need a 6-9 months for the implant to completely heal so I am looking for bone building medications as an alternative to bone preserving medications like Fosamax. So I may be on a bone building medication like Forteo and Tymlos soon in order to take me through the 6-9 month period that my dental implant will need in order to heal.

It sounds as if you have a good oral surgeon. What I am finding is not all oral surgeons or drs are equal, some are better than others and that is the main reason people do better or don't.

That said, which oral surgeon are you using?

Also, do you have a bone doctor who treats you with the Evenity?

I am currently with a GYN doctor who diagnosed my osteoporosis but it would seem I need to find a bone doctor or an endocrinologist who understand parathyroid affecting drugs like Forteo and Tymlos and their effect on the body, how to take and monitor it.

I will travel cross country if I have to in order to make sure I have a good oral surgeon.

Another thing, I know this could happen to me soon because I am experiencing problems with my right hip. When you had your hip replacement did you have osteoporosis then?

Thank you so very much for any information.

I went to a Dr. Mills/oral surgeon in Southern Indiana. But, I believe that any oral surgeon with years of experience, I would trust, as everyone's body is different.
I didn't know I had Osteoporosis either and was surprised when it was discovered. I can tell you that my regular doctor prescribed the Evenity. I did try Tymlos with another doctor but my insurance would not pay much on it. My medicare and supplement took care of the Evenity shots. I had no problem on Evenity at all. I was finally able to get my back surgery to fix my broken back after the Evenity shots. After surgery, my surgeon had informed me that my bones had looked really good. You have to take another drug after Evenity which my doctor chose Prolia. I am not really happy about that drug but my doctor is an internist and he says that it is a good drug. Some people do have problems with it though. I believe that any drug you take can cause problems with Osteoporosis. I will be rechecked again next month about the level of Osteoporosis that I have or no longer have. I did not have Osteoporosis I don't believe when I had injured my hip and needed a total hip replacement. I had picked up my elderly mom and had a labreum tear. I had that replaired and two years after that my hip was gone. So far, my jaw gets sore like it always has but so far it has been ok.

@healthmatters without fractures, I have been told and read that osteoporosis does not have symptoms. Pain in your hip may be from osteoarthritis. Have you had an x-ray?

No X-rays only a DEXA scan. But I need to definitely request my hip be evaluated.

@windyshores

@drsuefowler can you try Evenity?

Jump to this post

Maybe @windyshores. I am scared of the whole dose and might consider half a dose. I have an aneurysm in my heart and problems with circulation. I will talk with endo about Evenity at my next appt. I probably should get an OK from a cardiologist. I don't have one so will take some time to get in.

It's hard @drsuefowler. In my experience cardiologists don't know much. If they google (mine did) they see the black box warning. They study actually didn't who any difference between Evenity and placebo in terms of cardiovascular risk but slight difference with alendronate.

Then again, I have found the endos don't know cardiology. Mine kept avoiding certain meds because I have afib.

I hope you get some good advice and maybe your docs could talk to each other!!

That would be so nice @windyshores! None of my doctors talk to each other. In fact, I'm lucky if they talk to me. They are so busy squeezing in patients. Interesting that the Evenity study didn't really show any cardiovascular risk compared to placebo. The risk seems to be hypothetical due to the inhibition of sclerostin. It is frustrating and confusing. I have learned so much from the people on this website and wonder how much my doctors actually know. I feel like I'm doctoring myself, which isn't good. Thanks for your comment and your help!

Was this study done pre- or post-approval? If post, then those at risk of cardiovascular events were precluded from receiving Evenity. That skews the results but did protect those most at risk.

There is an old saying about statistics don't lie but statisticians do.
