Preview peripheral neuropathy dealing with open wound for 2 1/2 years
I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy for the last seven years. I’ve been dealing with an open wound on my right big toe for 2 1/2 years. It will not heal does anybody have any suggestions for me?

That sucks. How long have you been fighting with the ulcer? I noticed you said you are an active person and don’t sit very much. Could your prolonged standing upright be contributing to a degree to the non-healing? I’m only shooting from the hip in this from my years of experience as a nurse. I know I wouldn’t want to have to sit for an extended period no more than you. Maybe something will stick to the wall one day. Good luck.
Hi there,
I have been fighting this for almost 2 and half years now.
There for a long time I would put my foot in to a work boot and go on with my business.
Then every other week I would go back to the wound clinic and they would work on my toe.
The Doctor would say I think this is more of a rubbing problem, he would give me a special shoe and when they would wrap my foot they do a off loading pad underneath my foot so no pressure on my toe. So about 3 months ago I changed my routine and started wearing a brace that won’t let any pressure on the toe. It is helping.
But I need to back up here.
About a 2 and half years ago they would cast my foot
I would go in once a week and they would cut the cast off dress the wound and put one more cast on.
I did this for about 3-4 months the wound would close and I graduated from the wound clinic.
Then it would take about 3 months and it would open back up.
Wow! You’ve been thru the ringer like so many others. My dad lost both his legs to diabetes and I know it’s not fun. Do you have a therapist or someone else you have to talk with?
No not really, my wife is probably the best therapist I have.
I just started this group this last week.
A life time partner helps a great deal. I’ll look for you in the forum.
Little update,
I must hit my toe on something in the last two days.
Last night when my wife was taking care of my wound she notice some blood on the dressing, when she unwrapped it my big toe’s toenail is about to come off!
I hope there is no other damage to the toe. I go back to the wound clinic today.
Keep your fingers crossed!!
Thanks
Would encourage you to look at PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Therapy, Red Light Therapy, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Look at each in isolation and the benefits to wound healing. Look at PEMF and Red Light for potential benefits to neuropathy and micro vessel blood flow. Then, look to understand what a combination of these complementary therapies could bring to your healing and to maintenance over time. Look to understand what PEMF and Red Light bring to inflammation management.
Hi,
I have been dealing with an open wound on my left big toe, for about 2 1/2 years now.
Are you seeing a wound doctor or going to a wound clinic?
