Do you know when you are leaking urine post surgery?
Hey guys,
Hope everyone is doing well today.
I want to know if you can feel the urge prior to or during urinary leakage post prostatectomy? My prostatectomy is this coming Tuesday April 16th. I’m stocking up on supplies this weekend. Any product endorsements for diapers or pads?
Wishing all of you a good day today.

I recommend a small supply of pads ( just in case ) I can feel a little leakage and I am 2 years post surgery. It could be a lot worse Good luck
Once you get past the first week or so, from catheter being removed I seem to remember yes you will know when to head to bathroom. I am @ 10 months post surgery and still use lightest pad but only .01 or .02 by weight leak. For me now I believe most leaking is right after urinating, just hard to stop dripping. Just started to see pelvic floor trainer last week. Coughing and sneezing do not cause me to leak but the occasional clearing my throat ever once in a while I do feel a little squirt of leak. I hope you are one of us that has no leaks at all . I have a friend that had absolutely no leaks from day one. I will get to totally dry soon I believe. At any rate life is good you will do well and probably find things not as bad as you fear.
I had no leakage at all following my November RP. I believe that is due to religiously doing Kegel exercises. I only felt the urge to go occasionally. I would suggest waiting a little bit after peeing to see if there is an additional little bit to go. Best wishes!
During the first couple of months, I recall NOT noticing before I was about to leak. WHILE it was coming out I could begin to feel it, and could stop the flow with a well-timed Kegel contraction. Then I learned to contract BEFORE starting a sneeze or cough. Luckily, I gained full continence within 3-4 months after surgery.
If you're buying pads before the surgery, don't get a lot. I used diapers for about 4 days, then #3s for a few weeks, #2s for a few more, and then onto #1. My brand of choice was Poise, sticking them inside my underpants. I bought too many, not knowing how long I might need them.
I am feeling confident and not real worried about the leakage. Just wanted some input on the urge. How is the rest of your recovery at 2-years out? Hoping your doing well.
Thanks for the response, well wishes and sharing your situation. I hope the pelvic floor trainer works well for you. I agree and thanks for saying: “life is good”. Having a positive attitude helps. It will be different but I’m looking forward to the next chapters of my life. I’ve read both good, not so good, and terrible stories.
Take care
That’s great. I’m glad you have no leakage at all. I have been doing the Kegels and will do them post surgery when they clear me to do them. Good tip on giving a little extra time after going. Thanks for the well wishes. Best to you as well.
I was wondering about noticing. Seems like some guys do some don’t. I expect the stress incontinence and like your suggestion. Happy to hear you regained full continence. That’s great. Thanks for the suggestions on the pads as well. Someone at my wife’s work gave us pads and diapers to start us off. I’ll check out the poise.
